Students Recall Stabbing Incident That Occurred During SPW

Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, violence broke out at the Parker Commons Insomnia Party over Spring Party Weekend (SPW). During what Hamilton Police Chief Rick Gifford is calling “a massive brawl,” two males were stabbed, one a Colgate student and the other a Colgate alumnus. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but according to statements issued by Gifford, the victims seem to have been stabbed by two different suspects who were from off campus. Full story

Administration: Trust and Respect Colgate Students, Please

As any attendee of a Colgate tour knows, Colgate prides itself on tradition. It’s nice to have these deeply-engrained ideas of what is intrinsically “Colgate.” I’m sure in 20 years, I’ll be excited for each Colgate Day, and search for Adam and (St)Eve during visits to campus. Full story

Tennis: Women Smash Records, Men On Par

Both Men’s and Women’s Tennis had a stellar season this spring. With the women beating Colgate’s all-time record with their 11-5 standing at the end of the regular season, and the men finishing with a solid 7-11 record, both teams should be proud of their work this year. Full story

The Opening Act: Goo Goo Dolls Deliver a Relaxed Start to SPW

For many students, Spring Party Weekend was well under way by the time the Goo Goo Dolls stormed into the Sanford Field House at 7 p.m. this past Friday. However, whether the band was your first event of the infamous weekend or if you had started celebrating two days prior, the Goo Goo Dolls were definitely received much better than many students expected.     It’s hard to believe that four years have passed by so quickly. It’s a mantra now, something to remind me of everything about Colgate that has been so important. Yet, even as the final weeks come to their inevitable close, I’m forced to ask the deeper question: what has happened? What is it that the liberal arts education (and everything in between) actually taught me?

    Lessons # 1-13: Why I can Afford to Care

    Colgate has been exceptionally good to me. I have worked hard during my four years and will be leaving Hamilton with a plan for the fall, a pretty good transcript and a wonderful network of friendships. Most importantly I feel as though I’ve learned how to make things happen in ways I can carry with me across that looming graduation stage. I entered Colgate knowing – or thinking I knew – exactly who I was. I’ll be leaving with a very similar set of ambitions to the ones I came with. But Colgate has taught me something I never thought I needed to know: why I can afford to be the person I am.

    There's More To College Than Finding A Job

    As I sit down to reflect on the past four years I’ve spent at Colgate, it is sometimes difficult to see clearly through the dark shadow hovering over the Class of 2013 that is the job search. Though there has certainly been general feelings of nostalgia and appreciation for the time we’ve spent here, many seniors can probably agree there is an overwhelming sense of alarm, a rather irrational fear of graduating without a job. My senior reflection, therefore, is a plea to my fellow seniors, as well as a warning to underclassmen, that finding a job should not take precedence in our final semesters.

    I have been on the Maroon-News for the past four years. It has been the one stable presence throughout my entire Colgate experience. I have met some of my closest friends through my work on the newspaper, and I know that my involvement on it will stick out in my entire Colgate experience.     Four Cliche Lessons that Made Colgate Worth It (Because 13 Would Just Be Annoying)

    Colgate is expensive. But after paying an exorbitantly high tuition, student fees and getting nickel-and-dimed by the petty rent-a-cop outfit we call Campo, I still think that the time and money we invest in Colgate is a low price to pay for the amazing amount of growth, maturation and insight that we gain in a frighteningly short four-year period.
    So, here’s a list of total clichés that briefly recount the most important life lessons I learned at Colgate – each corresponding roughly with a lesson learned each successive class year.

    From Photographer to Editor

    I started off as a photographer for the Maroon-News three years ago. Each week I would flip through the paper in search for my photographs. Seeing which photograph was selected and reading the article that went along with it became a weekly occurrence. I loved seeing my name in the paper along with my photographs. Being a photographer for the Maroon-News introduced me to a lot of different aspects of Colgate that I never would have been involved with hadn’t I joined the newspaper. I was encouraged to go to events that interested me. Having the ability to depict an event through a photograph is one of the most appealing aspects to being a photographer. If you have any interest in photography, I encourage you to join the paper. It is a really great experience seeing your photographs in print.

    Writing About the Arts at Colgate

    As I reflect on my time with the Maroon-News, I’m looking over my writing. Searching through some old articles that I wrote, I come across my piece that I did on the first ever ’Gatestock that took place in the spring of 2010. The first ’Gatestock was a lot like Woodstock in that it rained and there was a lot of mud. It was also pretty cold. And, diligent first-year writer that I was, I stayed for almost the whole thing. In those few hours, however, I saw something that was simply amazing.
