The ALANA Alert

There were more than grills being fired up at the African, Latin, Asian and Native Amerian (ALANA) Cultural Center on Thursday, September 4. From 4 to 7 p.m., the patio of the center offered a barbeque, which became a hub of activity for the Colgate community. As Zon Del Barrio entertained the crowd with salsa rhythms, students were able to meet with representatives from the Admissions Office and Greek Life, register to vote or simply enjoy the break from their studies. A collaboration between a number of different campus organizations, the annual ALANA Kick-Off BBQ inaugurated the fall semester in tremendous fashion. Over 300 students, staff and faculty were in attendance. If this event is any indication as to what can be expected during the coming year, ALANA is well on its way to meeting its goal of becoming a welcoming space and resource for the greater Colgate community. In the coming weeks, the center will open its doors to Consuelo Castillo Kickbush on Monday, September 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. Also keep an eye out for the voting initiative, Breaking Bread Program and the upcoming ALANA radio show hosted on WRCU.
