Both Track Teams Continue Spring Seasons

Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams had mixed results last Saturday. The women started their season off on the right foot at the Dick Shea Invitational hosted by Army. They snatched four victories and 18 top-five finishes. Though the men’s team had some strong personal performances and did well in the relays, they finished fourth out of four teams at Navy.

In West Point, New York the weather was cold and the wind was blowing. However, none of that discouraged the Raiders led by Coach Laura Nardelli. The four victories and multiple top-five finishes that the women pulled off are a testament to their commitment.

“It was a pretty chilly day,” Nardelli said. “It’s hard for the kids to be out there, especially the 10K runners who are out there for 40 minutes.”

First-year Stacey Marion began the meet by securing second place in the 10,000-meter run. Saturday was the first time she had competed in that race, and Marion earned a spot in the ECAC Championship for it. Rookie Michelle Miller ran a career-best time of 25.62 in the 200-meter dash, winning the race. Teammate Junior Curry Knox took second place in the same race for ‘Gate. Junior Andrea Fugazot proved why this year women’s team is extremely versatile in all distances by winning the 800. Another victory came in the 4X400 relay. Sophomore Sarah Chabal leaped to victory in the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 10.96 meters. Senior Elizabeth Kennedy competed for the first time in several months, stealing second in the 5,000-meter race.

In Annapolis, the men still had several noteworthy performances despite the last-place finish. Both senior Thomas Dilworth and sophomore Lyle Tolli took second place in the 100-meter dash and the 5,000-meter run, respectively. Senior Andy Holway earned points for ‘Gate by placing fourth in the 400-meter dash, and sophomore Phil Natoli tied for third in the 400-meter hurdles.

Next week the men head to Princeton, while the women compete at William and Mary.
