Men’s Lacrosse Foiled By Buckeyes in Midwest Battle

For the second consecutive game, the men’s lacrosse team fell to a highly regarded opponent on the road. Despite accumulating a 5-3 advantage heading into the halftime break, the Raiders were unable to hang on to the lead and were outscored 10-1 in the second half, eventually losing to The Ohio State Buckeyes, 13-6.

Colgate opened its scoring early in the contest, with junior attack Kevin Colleluori registering a goal 1:55 into the game. Ohio State, however, was quick to respond with two retaliatory goals minutes later. Colgate then exchanged a pair of scores with the Buckeyes, tying the game at three before junior attack Brandon “Rolls Royce” Corp fired in two rapid strikes within 49 seconds to give the Raiders the 5-3 halftime edge.

Though the first-half performance by Colgate was encouraging, the Buckeyes came out flying in the second half. Ohio State rattled off five unanswered goals while holding the Raiders scoreless throughout the entire third quarter. With Ohio State leading 9-5 at the start of the fourth stanza, the Raiders were able to muster one consolation goal before four more Ohio State tallies concluded the game.

Senior midfielder EJ Atamian had the following to say about the rough start to the season.

“When you take on top quality opponents early in the year, it’s tough to get results away from home,” Atamian said. “Despite the losses the team has learned a lot from each game, and we know the tough road trips are going to pay dividends when we enter the Patriot League schedule.”

The Raiders finished the game with three players registering goals: Corp (three goals), Colleluori (two) and sophomore midfielder Ian Murphy (one). Sophomore goalie Tim Harrington recorded nine saves in net and senior midfielder Chris Eck once again won a majority of his face-off battles by going 10-for-19. On the other side, three players had hat tricks for Ohio State to lead the Buckeyes in scoring.

On a brighter note, Corp’s accolades continue to roll in. He was named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List earlier in the week, becoming the first player in program history to be recognized as a potential recipient of college lacrosse’s highest honor. The trophy is awarded to the top college lacrosee player in the country at the conclusion of every season.

The Raiders look to earn their first win today at 4 p.m. when they take on St. Joseph’s in the snowy Astroturf home of ‘Gate Lax known as Tyler’s Field.
