Women’s Tennis Shines at Binghamton Invitational

The women’s tennis team traveled to Vestal, New York last weekend for the Binghamton Invitational, competing in both singles and doubles matches. The Raiders had a strong showing in singles competitions, finishing with a 12-8 mark. The windy city trio of junior Erin Fenn and sophomores Sam Inacker and Cameron “Killa Cam” Williams all notched singles victories. Top singles player Elise DeRose also played well, defeating Marist’s Erin Godly, 8-4. Sophomore Jackie Stimmel, whose ferocious competitiveness has earned her the nickname “The Assassin”, continued her phenomenal play this season by winning both of her singles matches.

Meanwhile, the first-year tandem of Alexi Aberant and Stephanie Bender matched Stimmel’s efforts. Bender had a thrilling three-set match against Binghamton’s Alex Sinclair. After dropping the first set 6-2, Bender charged back by winning the second set, 6-1. She then closed out her opponent with a 10-4 victory in the super breaker. First-year Jen Marquit was the Flight B singles champion, dominating Marist’s Retta Byron 7-5, 6-3 before handling Megan Burgess, also from Marist, with ease, 8-4.

Unfortunately, Colgate was unable to match its singles success in doubles play. Facing tough competition from Binghamton and Marist, Colgate could only manage three doubles victories. The first-year duo of Aberant and Marquit provided two of the wins en route to winning the Flight B doubles championship. Fenn and Stimmel notched the last doubles victory by defeating the Binghamton duo of Gayathri Balasundar and Alex Sinclair, 8-4.

After a long break, Colgate will take to the courts for the ITA Regionals in Norfolk, Virginia, which begin on October 19th.
