Raiders Row Down Minuteman

Amid cool temperatures and mildly gusty winds, the Colgate women’s varsity rowing team showed its stuff in the metropolis of Pelham, New York over the weekend. Competing against the University of Massachusetts and Iona University on Orchard Beach Lagoon, Colgate’s boats found themselves finishing third only once in four races. Each race began with at least three boats. The varsity four crew of first-year Allison Patchen (cox), senior Lauren Realberg (stroke), sophomore Sarah Kruse (3-seat), junior Caitlyn Pearlman (2-seat) and junior Yasmin Rozwadowski (bow) earned Colgate’s only first-place finish, crossing the line with a time of 8:13.6. They were followed in second place by Iona’s A boat.

Colgate’s varsity eight found itself a bit less fortunate, finishing second to first-place UMass, who recorded a time of 6:57.7. Senior Margaux Jackson (cox), senior Lindsey Hochman (stroke), senior Kinsey Carlson (7-seat), first-year Vicky Hulit (6-seat), senior Laura Lunn (5-seat), first-year Lauren Schmetterling (4-seat), junior Ande Reisman (3-seat), sophomore Meredith Remmer (2-seat) and senior Emily Burton (bow) crossed the finish line with a time of 7:03.8. The second varsity eight also claimed second behind UMass. as junior Caroline Tobias (cox), junior Colleen McCann (stroke), sophomore Michelle Nolan (7-seat), junior Cassie Rotman (6-seat), first-year Kaela Chow (5-seat), first-year Meredith Buerger (4-seat), sophomore Liz Congdon (3-seat), sophomore Melissa Madaio (2-seat) and junior Lyndsae Schneider (bow) finished with a time of 7:33.5, behind the Minutemen’s 7:16.9. The novice boat finished third behind UMass’ A and B boats, recording a time of 8:24.4. Sophomore Melissa Glasser (cox), first-year Laura London (stroke), sophomore Meann Dingman (3-seat), first-year Nicole la Hausse de Lalouviere (2-seat) and first-year Olivia Roat (bow) rowed for the Raider novices.

Despite boat-ready conditions in Syracuse, the Orange greeted the Colgate men’s rowing team with an icy reception this weekend. Although only a scrimmage, the Upstate rivals were superior to the Raider rowers, serving as tougher competition than last week’s adversary, Ithaca College. The men look forward to bounce back with a home meet this Saturday against Dowling, if lake conditions permit. The women will travel to Camden, New Jersey for this weekend’s Knecht Cup.
