Colgate Couture – Pretty in Pink

Ah spring; the season filled with flowing chiffons, fresh floral prints, and sweet pastels. False. Throw your traditional sentiments of spring aside because this season, spring is filled with spikes, studs and typical Ramones-style skinny jeans. Although bondage bracelets, black leather, and silver spikes are staples this spring, Punk has sprouted new styles and blossomed into a fresh and forward looking fashion trend. With the emergence of Glam and Prep Punk, you can give your ensembles a sharp edge without looking like you just fought your way out of a mosh pit. Put your preconceived notions of spring aside because Punk’s penetration of Spring ’07 styles is bigger than the British Invasion.

Black leather is a punk pre-requisite and no one transformed this rough rocker look quite like Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci. The designer took the classic “Punk” leather vest and tailored it into a feminine top that’s too hot for even the Sex Pistols. Fierce and fitted, Givenchy’s sleeveless leather vest is worn as a shirt and its Punk influence is accented by the ‘torn’ hole that exposes the top of the chest. Pair this punk piece with a pair of skinny black or white trousers and you’ll have a hard look that still screams high fashion.

Lanvin and Emanuel Ungaro used Punk prints to add a punch to their spring collections. Lanvin’s washed shiny shantung dress turns the typical Hot Topic vinyl look into chic showstopper. The straight, loose mini-dress is entirely covered by a tan and black newspaper-style print of a sensual face with pouty lips. The high neck is adorned with pointy black popper studs, adding the final touch to this sophisticated punk print mini.

Emanuel Ungaro ventures into Glam Punk territory with his embroidered black lip dress. This metallic micro-mini tank dress is a loose fit, but its clingy cut makes for a smooth and sultry silhouette. Lots of luscious black and grey toned lips cover the dress’s shimmering silver background, and when worn with pointed black booties, Ungaro’s mini is Glam Punk perfection.

Prep Punk is an entirely new addition to the past Punk trends. Mixing punk pieces like super skinny jeans and black boots with scoop-neck tee’s and preppy knits, this peculiar combo makes for a fresh new fashion. Shopbop.com pairs JBrand’s cigarette leg white jeans with a grey tee and Twinkle’s bolt of lightning cropped sweater. This concoction takes the best from both of these extremely different worlds, as the white color of the jeans make them less “hardcore” Punk, and the sweater’s jagged and stripped print keeps it from looking too country club. Pull this look to the preppy side by wearing it with ballet flats, or push more Punk with a pair of pointy black boots.

While some designers chose to take the whole look punk, others chose to focus on accessories. Shoes and cuffs are popular punk accents that can be worn to toughen up the average outfit. Chlo?e’s metal cuff bracelet is sure to add some spunk to a so-so spring ensemble. The wide cotton bracelet clasps with a bulky knot in the back and is covered end to end with blunt, silver studs. Wear it with a basic black or white outfit to give it that extra kick.

Chlo?e’s cuff will ease you into punk accents, but Tom Binns’ bullet bracelet will shoot your look into punk mode. The sterling silver bracelet consists of 15 sharp bullets that have been delicately placed on a dainty silver chain. Wear it with all black for a sharp, spiky look that’s right on target.

Shoes are possibly the most punked out accessory of Spring ’07. Dior by John Galliano’s Extreme Sandals are a piercing pair of Punk footwear. These 12cm black stiletto sandals are strappy, studded, and wrap around the ankle for a bondage look. The combination of thick and thin leather strips adds substance to the severe sandal, and the chunky silver hardware provides the final Punk touch. For a softer, but still punk influenced look, slip into Marc Jacob’s tweed ballet flats. Marc’s blue and white tweed flats may sound sweet and springy, but the square, silver studs that cover the toes add a Punk punch.

Scorah Pattullo’s gudrun padded booties in black are the pinnacle of Punk footwear. Perfect with skinny jeans or a mini dress, Pattulo’s round toe booties’ sleek shape, rounded toe, and slip front make them a spring essential.

If you think that you’ll be picking flowers while wearing pastels this spring, think again because Spring ’07 is all about being pretty in Punk!
