Colgate Ultimate Glides Past Foes

Last weekend, the Jabberwock, Colgate’s ultimate Frisbee team, traveled to Long Island to compete in an exciting 16-team tournament hosted by Stony Brook University.

Facing windy conditions, the Jabberwock played sluggishly in their first game. Using a zone defense to frustrate the Colgate handlers, Hofstra took a quick lead and never looked back, cruising to a 13-9 victory. The Jabberwock took their frustrations out on Binghamton-B in their next game, a 13-0 shutout where Binghamton-B struggled to get anything going against the Colgate defense.

In their final pool play game, Colgate again started off slowly, this time against NYU. Taking advantage of the Jabberwock mistakes, NYU jumped to a 10-5 lead. At that point, though, Colgate stepped up their defensive intensity to go on a 7-1 run, leading to a 12-11 victory off two straight goals by sophomore captain Chris Tonry.

For their final match of the day, the Jabberwock faced rival Skidmore College. Although the game was close throughout, Skidmore held onto a slight advantage to record a 13-10 victory.

Colgate opened the tournament’s second day against WPI. Because of the strong wind, both teams committed numerous turnovers, but the Jabberwock slowly amassed a lead, taking a well-earned victory 13-7.

Next, the Jabberwock faced Georgetown, who was undefeated in the tournament at that point. Colgate again started sluggish, allowing Georgetown to take a 10-5 lead. Duplicating their feat against NYU, the Jabberwock defense then took over the game, leading to an 8-1 run and a 13-11 victory.

In the semifinals, Colgate met Hofstra for the second time during the weekend. Unfortunately for the Jabberwock, Hofstra proved that the first meeting was no fluke. Their zone defense smothered Colgate, leading to a 15-7 win. In the championship game, Albany, who was undefeated over the weekend, defeated Hofstra, 15-10.

Colgate’s next tournament will be on April 7th, when the Jabberwock host five teams on Whitnall Field.
