Men’s Collegiate Four Takes First

Mens Collegiate Four Takes First

The only Bostonian event that could have trumped the 42nd Head of the Charles Regatta in importance last weekend would have been the World Series at Fenway Park. But since David Ortiz and the Red Sox fell well short of that goal this year, the Head of the Charles became the weekend’s premier event in Beantown. The Colgate Raiders had much success in Boston, winning the men’s Collegiate Four and finishing in sixth place in the women’s Collegiate Four. The men’s collegiate four boat, consisting of junior Doug Herling, senior Tom Leonard, sophomore Kurt Miller, senior Brenna O’Rourke (coxswain) and sophomore Matt Rogowski, finished the 28 boat race with a time of 18:12, which was eleven seconds faster than second-place finisher RIT.

“They had a very strong second half of the race,” Assistant Coach Matt Hanig said. “Brenna steered a terrific line.”

Unfortunately, the men’s collegiate eight did not fare so well. The team had some difficulties throughout the race and finished in 50th place.

“They had some trouble on the Eliot Street Bridge turn,” Hanig said. “Sometimes things just don’t go well, and that’s kind of what happened.”

The women’s collegiate four team was comprised of senior Lauren Realberg, junior Lyndsae Schneider, sophomore Liz Congdon, and first-years Meredith Buerger and Allison Patchen (coxswain). Colgate was a mere twelve seconds away from finishing in the top three with Bucknell taking first.

The women’s crew team also placed well in the collegiate eight, finishing in 20th place out of 57 teams. Yale University won that event and finished a full seventeen seconds ahead of second place Brock University.

Both crew teams will send rowers to the Head of the Fish regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY. While the men’s team will be sending its novice rowers, the women will be sending their best competitors for next weekend’s race.
