Field Hockey Wins In Overtime

Saturday afternoon found the Lady Raiders in a familiar situation. Alongside gusty winds and indecisive weather, the Broncos of Rider forced Colgate into overtime. Yet this weekend yielded a new result; a 3-2 win for the Raiders, advancing them to a season record of 1-2.

The road to overtime began with the Colgate offense. Moving down the field, junior Lauren Remkus made a quick pass to sophomore Amanda Gilmore. Gilmore then continued on for the game’s first goal, after 12:10 of play.

A sluggish Rider team took their time in answering Gilmore’s call. With just under five minutes left in the first, Rider’s Stephanie Walker drew senior Jacque DeMarco out of the goal. She then connected with Heather Connelly to yield a 1-1 tie heading into halftime.

Holding true to last weekend’s play, the Raiders took the field appearing revived and fired up. “During the half, Coach talked about how we were acting as Rider’s offense. We were turning the ball over and letting them score. [In the second half] we needed to make the changes and become a defensive team again.” Junior Natali Plesniarski said.

The half-time encouragement seemed to work as the Raiders took the field and proceeded to collapse their defense tight while taking over offensive play. This allowed sophomore Lauren Carey to take advantage of a penalty
