Colgate Ultimate Defeats Duke and Bowdoin

Last week, 12 different Ultimate Frisbee teams descended upon Tybee Island, just outside of Savannah, GA, for a Spring Break tournament organized by senior Steve Wai and junior Cody Tipton. The Jabberwock, Colgate’s Ultimate Frisbee team, began the tournament in a pool that featured Duke, Notre Dame and Iowa State.

Colgate found its rhythm early, taking advantage of Duke’s troubles and racing to a 7-0 lead at halftime. While Duke avoided the shutout with an early score in the second half, Colgate won the game, destroying the Blue Devils by a score of 13-1. Unlike Duke, the Raiders next opponent, Notre Dame, proved to be much tougher. Despite a rare Callahan goal (an interception in the opponent’s endzone) by senior Greg Mole, the Jabberwock fell, 8-13.

The next day, Colgate faced Iowa State, which had previously defeated both Duke and Notre Dame. The Jabberwock hung onto Iowa State’s heels until the end, falling 10-13 after Iowa State scored the game’s final three goals. Entering bracket play as the sixth seed, Colgate then matched up against Bowdoin College’s B team. The game was tight early on, with the Jabberwock taking the lead at the half, 7-6. The rest of the game was all Colgate, however, as the Jabberwock raced to a 13-7 win.

On the final day of the tournament, Colgate drew the third seed, Washington University of St. Louis. Both teams played close all game, but Colgate won, 13-12, thanks to many deep runs by senior Nicolo Giorgi and another Callahan goal, this time by sophomore Dave McKenzie.

The Jabberwock ran out of fuel in its final game of the tournament, however, losing to Edinboro University, 10-13 in the semifinals. Subsequently, Edinboro took the championship by defeating Iowa State, 15-4 in the finals.

Following its successful run in Georgia, the Jabberwock will be on the road once again this weekend, traveling to Lancaster, PA to compete in another tournament.
