Choi Takes Home IM Free Throw Title

Free Throw TournamentSenior James Choi has faced some tough luck this year in Colgate intramural basketball. After all but guaranteeing a victory for his Running Suckers squad prior to this year’s intramural basketball playoffs, Choi’s team fell for the third consecutive year in the finals. Then, in the 3-on-3 basketball tournament a few weeks later, Choi’s team once again fell in the championship to Staff Infection.Despite his tough luck, the senior sharpshooter finally had his moment in the intramural basketball sun on Sunday when he knocked home a stellar 46-of-50 free throws to capture the annual Intramural Free Throw Tournament at Huntington Gymnasium.Choi shot a Calvin Murphy-esque 92 percent from the charity stripe, including a streak of 17 consecutive shots made at one point.Despite the amazing percentage, the title was not a gimme for the senior from Long Island. His close friend and Yo Mets teammate, senior Alex Friedman, nearly matched Choi by hitting 45-of-50 shots from the line, swishing home his last 14 foul shots.Choi and Friedman were not the only shooter to put shots in at a 90 percent clip. Sophomore Jon Lin, a late entry in the contest from Team Nintendo, nearly shocked Choi by making an afternoon-best 18 consecutive free throws at one point, finishing tied with Friedman at 90 percent.Other high individual scorers included senior Pat Kosiek of Sigma Chi with 43, sophomore Evan Winter of the Running Suckers with 41, and junior Brandon Cannaday (Phi Delta Theta), senior Chris Caverly (Theta Chi), and junior Jon Lopez (Yo Mets) with 40 each.In order to qualify for team points in the contest, each team had to have a minimum of four shooters. The Yo Mets, to no surprise, ran away with the title by hitting 165-of-200 shots for a remarkable 82.5 percent mark from the line. Other teams earning points included Theta Chi (128-of-200, 64 percent) and Phi Delt (118-of-200, 59 percent).Ice HockeyThe final leg of the intramural hockey regular season came to a close last night, but the previous week was highlighted by a number of important games in both leagues. In League A, Beta Theta Pi (Beta) pulled off an upset last Thursday by surprising the first-place Whalers by a 4-1 margin. The Whalers still stand in first place in the league with 12 points and a 6-2 record.Closely behind in second place in League A is Sigma Chi A, which was idle last week, staying at 5-3 in the league with 10 points. After its victory over The Whalers, Beta moved to within two points of Sigma Chi A with a 4-2 record and eight points to its credit. On Sunday, Delta Upsilon (DU) was able to break up a last-place tie in the league by knocking off Theta Chi by a score of 5-1. DU is now fourth in League A with a 2-5-1 record, while Theta Chi sits in last with three points. In League B, the perennial intramural powerhouse Yo Mets continued to distance itself from the rest of the pack with a huge 6-3 win over the Panty Raiders in a battle for first place. The Yo Mets currently stand two wins above the Panty Raiders in the league with an 8-1 record and 16 points, while the Panty Raiders maintained their 12 points and fell to 6-3 in the league after the loss.Team 917 continued its second-half turnaround last Thursday by knocking off the reeling Pep Band by a 5-0 margin. The third-place Team 917 now has 10 points and is sitting comfortably at 5-4.After a very busy hockey week, including a tough 3-2 win over the Frozen Ovaries and a surprising 6-6 tie with the Pep Band, Phi Delt gained three additional points to move to 4-5-1 in League B.The Frozen Ovaries, after their tough loss to Phi Delt last Thursday, are now fifth in League B with four points and a 3-6 record, while the Pep Band once again rounds out the league standings with a 1-8-1 record and three points. The intramural hockey playoffs start this Sunday at Starr Rink.
