3-on-3 BasketballIn Huntington Gymnasium on Saturday, a theme that has been present for years in Colgate intramural basketball continued to sustain itself, as the Running Suckers once again fell short of an intramural basketball title. This time, however, it was a 3-on-3 Championship Tournament in which the Running Suckers’ fell, as the same team that knocked off the Running Suckers in the intramural basketball tournament, Staff Infection, once again proved too much for their hard-luck opponents.On Saturday a nine-team tournament took place over the course of two hours to determine who would be this year’s 3-on-3 basketball champion at Colgate.The Running Suckers had a much tougher trip to the championship than did Staff Infection.After beating Jason and The Johnsons, 33-31, in the opening round, Phi Delta Theta (Phi Delt) was the first team to fall victim to the Running Suckers in a 26-25 squeaker.In the semifinals, the Running Suckers had a relatively easy go of it against a Theta Chi B team that knocked off Delta Kappa Epsilon, 29-22, in the previous round. The Running Suckers emerged over Theta Chi B by a 20-14 margin.The other side of the bracket, however, saw Staff Infection get a rare automatic bye to the finals. The other three teams on this side of the bracket – Theta Chi A, the Yo Mets and the Great Colgate Ballers – did not field teams, thus propelling Staff Infection into the finals.In a game that was somewhat closer than the intramural basketball championship from two weeks ago, Staff Infection clearly had an advantage thanks to their lack of competition in previous rounds. The team utilized a well-rested roster to defeat a tired Running Suckers squad by a 36-28 margin.The win marks a Staff Infection sweep of the intramural basketball team competitions this year and gives the team its third intramural championship this school year, with its previous title coming in intramural flag football.

Ice Hockey In a league dominated by fraternities, it has been the non-Greek team in League A, The Whalers, which continues to dominate league standings as the season comes to a close.With a victory Sunday over a forfeiting Sigma Chi A squad, The Whalers regained first-place in the league at 12 points with a 6-1 record.Despite losing ground in the standings to The Whalers, Sigma Chi A did earn another victory last Thursday, its fifth of the season, by defeating Theta Chi to earn its ninth and tenth points on the season.Beta Theta Pi is slowly securing the third position in the league, highlighted by a 6-1 defeat of Delta Upsilon (DU) last Thursday to move to 3-2 on the season with six points.Sitting in a last-place tie in League A are DU and Theta Chi, each sitting at three points with 1-5-1 records.In League B, a Yo Mets victory and a Panty Raiders loss helped to boost the Yo Mets back into first place in the league.The Yo Mets defeated Phi Delt, 11-3, on Sunday to move to 7-1 in the league with 14 points, while the Panty Raiders fell to 6-2 and maintained its 12-point total after a shocking 5-4 loss that same night at the hands of Team 917.With its victory on Sunday, Team 917 sits alone in third place in the league with eight points and a 4-2 record.In a fourth-place tie is the aforementioned Phi Delt squad, who managed to defeat Team 917 before its loss on Sunday to the Yo Mets. Phi Delt shares a 3-5 record with the Frozen Ovaries, who defeated the Pep Band, 5-1, on Sunday.As has been the case throughout the hockey regular season, the Pep Band still stands by itself in last place in League B with two points and a 1-7 record.
