Winter Intramural Sports Get Going

BasketballThis week ushered in the start of two new intramural sports seasons on campus: basketball and ice hockey. The basketball season started on Wednesday night with numerous teams vying for their chance at intramural glory.League A is highlighted by the usual suspects. Intramural football champion Staff Infection and intramural soccer champion Sigma Chi A look to continue their autumn success throughout the winter in Huntington Gym.Other squads in this league include America, Yeah (otherwise known as Delta Upsilon [DU]), soccer runner-up Phi Kappa Tau (Phi Tau) and Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE).While League B has four fraternity teams, the teams to watch in the league may be the independent squads. The two finalists in last year’s championship game, the Brothers, who won the intramural tournament on a last-second buzzer-beater, and the Running Suckers both look to make runs come playoff time.Rounding out League B is a plethora of Greek teams, including Theta Chi, Phi Delta Theta (Phi Delt), Beta Theta Pi (Beta) A and Sigma Chi B.The early favorite in League C is one of the team’s making a run at the all-university intramural points championship, Yo Mets – a team that has participated in every intramural sport so far this year. Teams like Beta B and Curtis look to make early noise in the league standings, with the Great Colgate Ballers and the Squadron of Doom completing the league.League D features the usual hodgepodge of intramural squads, ranging from the Regulators, the Division II soccer champion, to the Korean Students Association and Sigma Chi C.Early favorites to take home the intramural basketball look to be Staff Infection and Sigma Chi A in League A, as well as League B’s Running Suckers. While these teams have the intramural basketball history and experience behind them, one would be foolish to count out squads like Theta Chi and the Brothers before the season concludes. In the women’s league, the favorite looks to be Club, a squad with a number of experienced and athletic players that could be tough to defeat if it gets out to an early-season lead. Teams looking to knock off the early favorite will include Girls’ Lax and the Ice Cold Stompers.

Ice HockeyWednesday night also welcomed the start of the intramural ice hockey season at Starr Rink. The early favorite in League A looks to be Sigma Chi A, the defending champion. This squad has a number of ex-varsity athletes and key returning skaters as it attempts to repeat as intramural champs.Other teams looking to make a run at the League A crown include DKE, DU, Sigma Chi B, Theta Chi and an independent team in The Whalers. The aforementioned Yo Mets look to make noise in League B’s round robin season, but the squad will have to get through a perennial ice hockey threat in the Panty Raiders in order to do so.Phi Delt stands as the only Greek team in League B, while the Pep Band and the Frozen Ovaries look to make a mark as an underdog. Both seasons should be very competitive and exciting, so keep reading The Maroon-News for weekly score updates and analysis.
