Colgate Intramural Sports Kicks Off Year

September ushers in a number of special events at Colgate: the changing of the leaves, the recruitment of fraternities and sororities, Saturday afternoon football games at Andy Kerr Stadium, for starters. Another special event, although much less mentioned but equally as important to many students, is the start of the intramural sports season. The first sport on the slate for the 2004-05 school year is flag football. The new season began on Monday, as two fraternity games kicked off the schedule. Phi Tau took the first victory of the season by forfeit in League C, when Phi Delta Theta could not field a team due to Recruitment activities. In the second contest of the day, Sigma Chi blanked Beta Theta Pi 35-0, in front of the majority of their house, prospective recruits and a large barbeque on Whitnall Field.Just as on Monday, Tuesday afternoon began with a forfeit. In the next game Delta Upsilon successfully continued its in-house football tradition through by defeating Delta Kappa Epsilon. In another day’s game, Pooja easily defeated the Regulators to take early-season control of League D.Wednesday saw a balance between utter domination and last-minute miracles. In League B, Staff Infection set a pace that it would like to continue throughout the season with a 49-7 victory over Bishop Don. Phi Delt overcame a late second-half comeback by Yo Mets scoring a touchdown on the last play of the game to garner a 28-21 victory. In League D, Pooja pulled out a squeaker against URAGYIT while the Keystoners walked over the Regulators, 57-12.The early-season games most likely will set the tone for the remainder of the intramural season. In League A, an athletic Sigma Chi roster and a determined DU team look to be the front-runners, with DKE and Beta vying for other top seeds going into the playoffs at the end of the season.League B might be the most competitive of the leagues, with an eclectic group of teams vying for the top spot. Theta Chi represents the Greek system in the division, while the staff and faculty field a potential sleeper in Staff Infection. A perennial powerhouse on Colgate intramurals, the Brothers, and a first-year team, Bishop Don, round out the league.Phi Tau and Phi Delt look to make a mark on top of League C during the regular season, but they will be heavily tested by a number of independent teams. Yo Mets, a mainstay in Colgate intramurals, and the sophomore filled Goldschlaggers will challenge the two frats for the league crown. Sushi Bluez, a new entry to intramural football this year, rounds out the league. In addition to the aforementioned Pooja and Regulators, the Keystoners and URAGYIT round out the entries in League D.
