The Colgate track & field team has had an excellent season, with records set on both the men’s and women’s teams. On February 1, the Raiders hosted the 27th Annual Class of 1932 Invitational in the Sanford Field House. The Raiders dominated the competition: the women’s team placed first with 173.5 points, and the men in second with 98 points.
Several Raiders had particularly good days, with six Colgate women coming in first for their events. Senior Anna Orientale placed first in the 500-meter dash, also securing a personal record with a time of 1:19:04. In the 400-meter dash, it was first-year Carly Schwartz who was able to take first. Sophomores Emma Palmer and Skyler Berardi both set personal records in the 800-meter run, with Palmer taking first. In the mile, first-year Vicky Martinez took first and set a personal record with an impressive time of 5:22:39. In the field, sophomore Regine Cooper finished first in the weight throw. Sophomore Marina Reilly secured first place for the Raiders in both the triple jump and the long jump.
On the men’s side, sophomore Oliver Moe led the Raiders, setting a personal record in the 400-meter dash and taking first place with his time of 50.06 seconds. Junior Aidan Kutner beat his previous best by two full seconds in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:09.16.
In the mile for the men, senior Bobby Galante (4:28.02) and junior Timothy Englehart (4:37.75) both had personal bests, with Galante taking first place. The 4×800-meter relay team of Galante, Englehart, first-year Lucas Cully, and Jonathan Abbot also took first. Senior Daniel Mosko’s 15.44-meter weight throw was a personal best and 10th in school history.
The weekend of February 19, the Raiders traveled to Boston to compete in the Patriot League Championships. Several students did very well, qualifying them for the ECAC, IC4A Championship. Reilly had a successful day, setting a program record after jumping 11.81 meters in the triple jump. First-year Luke Myers set a first-year school record with a time of 1:57.16 in the 800-meter race. Just ahead of Myers, junior Colin Loughlin finished the 800 in 1:56.61. Moe and fellow sophomore Anthony Castillo competed in the 400-meter dash, Moe recording a time of 49.62 and Castillo, a 50.09. For the women, Schwartz and first-year Lauren Henske both set personal records in the 400-meter dash, and Orientale set a personal record in the 500. The men’s 4×400-meter relay team – including Moe, Castillo, senior Austin Perez and Loughlin – finished in 3:20.65, ending the season with their best
This weekend, March 3 through 5, several members of both the men and women’s track and field teams traveled to Boston, where they competed in the ECAC/IC4A Championship. Reilly had a great weekend, as she competed in the triple jump and recorded a distance of 11.50 meters. She placed thirteenth in the competition and now holds the third longest jump in Colgate history. The women’s 4×800 team of Palmer, Orientale, Martinez and sophomore Caroline Zaworski now hold the second-fastest time in Colgate’s indoor program history.
This meet will close out the 2016-17 indoor track season for the Raiders. The team will be looking to continue the momentum in the outdoor track season, which will begin on March 24 at Lafayette in Easton, PA at the 7-Way Meet.
