Women’s Tennis Slips Past Loyola, Falters Against Navy

The Colgate women’s tennis team tasted victory Saturday against future Patriot League contender Loyola University Maryland – the Greyhounds are set to join the League for the 2013-2014 season – with a final score of 4-3. However, they didn’t experience the same outcome in their match against Navy on Sunday, falling 7-0.

The Raiders were able to continue their streak of great doubles play, with junior Kelsey Shea and senior Meredith Rock emerging victorious in the second spot of the lineup with a score of 8-3. Partners first-year Jennifer Ho and senior Jackie Finn scored the same amount of points, winning in the third position.

In singles play, Colgate just barely held its lead, splitting the victories evenly with the Greyhounds. Loyola won in the top two spots as well as the fourth, while Colgate won at the third, fifth, and

sixth spots.

Sophomore Kelsey Wanhainen earned a big straight-set win in the third position of the lineup by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Rock clinched another win for her team in the fifth spot with a score of 6-2, 6-1.

First-year Katie Grant won by the same score in the sixth spot.

Head coach Bobby Pennington said of the team, “It feels great to get back on the winning track and get a tough win against a quality team, we showed our toughness and depth today.”

Unfortunately, the Raiders weren’t as lucky in their next match against Navy, which counts for their Patriot League record. They lost all single matches in straight sets and dropped the

doubles points.

The best performances came from Rock, who forced a tiebreak in the second set of her singles match, and the doubles teams of Rock and Shea, and Finn and Ho, who each lost 8-6. The match left Colgate with a 9-3 record and Navy with a

19-3 record.

Colgate women’s tennis will be back at it on Friday morning at 9 a.m. with a match against Army at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY. The Black Knights are 13-3 on the season and are riding an eight game winning streak.
