The Colgate women’s lacrosse team fell 13-11 this past weekend to the Hofstra Pride, ending their two-game winning streak that kicked off the season.

Despite the loss, the Raiders saw standout performances from junior midfielder Alison Flood with five goals, senior attacker Kate Sheridan, with one goal and four assists, as well as first-year midfielder Lauren Gorajek and senior midfielder Amanda O’Sullivan who each tallied four points. Sophomore goalie Jennie Berglin also made eight saves throughout the game.

The first half was rocky for Colgate, as Hofstra came out strong and quickly netted five goals. Flood scored once, giving the Pride an early four-point lead.

This deficit prompted head coach Heather Young to call a timeout. After the break, Colgate walked onto the field with energy and tenacity. The Raiders scored six goals – a second from Flood, two from O’Sullivan, and one each from Gorajek and Sheridan – while Hofstra only scored two, tying the game at 7-7. However the Pride responded with two quick goals, regaining their lead at 9-7.

The half ended with a two-goal deficit for the Raiders. A strong Hofstra defense caused nine turnovers in the half, contributing to their lead.

Hofstra kicked off the second half just as they had the first, scoring four goals in 13 minutes while Colgate only saw one goal from Gorajek, assisted by Sheridan, in that time period. At this point Hofstra’s lead was 13-8, the largest of the game. Gorajek responded, scoring her third and final goal of the game with just under 15 minutes left to play, bringing the score to 13-9. Once again, Sheridan assisted Gorajek, and she earned her fourth point of the game.

The Raiders seemed to be building

momentum, as Flood scored her third goal a mere 13 seconds after Gorajek’s third, shrinking the deficit to 3. However, the remainder of the game was tough for both teams, with a combined seven turnovers in 13 minutes. Berglin managed to keep Hofstra’s score at 13, making two saves in that time span.

The final goal of the game was netted by junior attacker Monica White, assisted by O’Sullivan. For the remaining 1:38 of the game, the Raiders put the pressure on Hofstra, stopping a free-position shot and any other scoring opportunities. The game ended in a 13-11 Hofstra victory.

The Pride shot the Raiders by four, while Colgate was clearly dominant on the draw, controlling 16 to Hofstra’s nine. Colgate also saw 19 turnovers, a probable factor in

their loss.

The Raiders will return to Tyler’s Field on Saturday March 2, to play the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers at
