Colgate Couture: Love Story

Nothing says collegiate style quite like Ali MacGraw in Love Story. The 1970 film features MacGraw as Jennifer Cavelleri, the intelligent girl from the wrong side of the tracks who falls for the rich and privileged Oliver Barett IV, played by Ryan O’Neal. What follows is a very melodramatic courtship and an ending that is rivaled only by A Walk to Remember. But never mind all of that, let’s talk fashion!

There are several key pieces needed to achieve the preppy collegiate fashion that has made Love Story so iconic. First and foremost is the camel trench-style wool coat that MacGraw sports throughout the film. In true prep fashion, she wears the coat with the collar popped. BB Dakota offers a double-breasted full-length camel coat called the Dedrick, with large lapels perfect for popping. Available on Lulu*s, the Dedrick coat is the perfect addition to any wardrobe this winter.

Other style signatures from Love Story are the cozy collegiate knit scarves and hats that are worn throughout the film. MacGraw rocked the Harvard colors as that was the Ivy that her character attended, but similar styles to the pieces worn in the film can be found at our own bookstore. Look for chunky knit caps and striped scarves for the Love Story-approved style. If you want the school-inspired look without actually representing your school’s colors, check out Forever 21 – the mega-chain store offers a rugby-stripe black-and-white scarf for only $8. Another accessory that is seen on Jenny throughout the film is a pair of brown leather gloves. Much sleeker and more stylish than a pair of chubby knit gloves, a good pair of Italian leather gloves will do the impossible – look chic while also keeping you warm this winter.

A look repeated throughout the film is the combination of a turtleneck, high-waist mid-length skirt and black tights. The look is simple enough that most all of us have these pieces already in our closets, but it’s incredibly stylish. J.Crew offers a style called the Tissue Turtleneck Tee for $30 in over a dozen different colors, a great style that is perfect for finding your Love Story shade. In one scene, MacGraw pairs a black turtleneck with a red plaid skirt and matching red plaid scarf. A subtle nod to this look would be to wear a long-sleeved black shirt with a red plaid scarf. There are plenty of red plaid scarves available online, but I am partial to the Albert scarf from Marc by Marc Jacobs, available on Bluefly for $82.

A classic cross-body bag is perfect to complete your Jennifer Cavelleri look – rarely was Jenny seen strolling across the Harvard quad without a leather satchel for all of her books. I personally like the simple cross-body bag from Fossil. With its antiqued hardware and broken-in leather, the bag looks like it came straight out of the 70s.
