The Colgate football team went back on the road this past weekend, travel­ling to Washington D.C. to face a tough 5-2 Georgetown Hoyas squad. After an even first quarter, the Hoyas dominated the remainder of the game to defeat the Raiders 40-17 and earn their first ever victory over ‘Gate. Even with the return of sophomore quarterback Gavin Mc­Carney and senior running back Nate Eachus, the Raiders were stumped by Georgetown’s tough defense and potent offensive assault.

Only a few minutes into play, the Hoyas struck with a touchdown pass play from 63 yards out. Georgetown quarter­back Isaiah Kempf found Jamal Davis to put Georgetown up by seven points. The pass was short, but Davis broke four tackles to take it the distance.

On the following kick off, first-year­Jimmy DeCicco almost took the ball all the way back, but the Georgetown kicker made a nice tackle to temporarily keep the Raiders out of the endzone.

Colgate did, however, eventually get there on the drive, striking less than three minutes later, when Eachus was handed the ball on the two-yard line for a rushing touchdown. The senior had 38 rushing yards and 34 receiving yards on the day. Junior Zauhn Lewis also contributed with 32 yards on six carries.

As the second quarter began, it ap­peared that the game would go back and forth for its entirety, but in the end it would be all Georgetown. A Brett Weiss field goal gave them the lead, but it was the back-to-back Nick Campanella and Isaiah Kempf rushing touchdowns that truly pushed the momentum to the home team. A 43-yard field goal from first-year Joe Uglietto rounded out the first half, but Colgate still trailed 24-10.

The second half was equally disap­pointing for the Raiders. Weiss nailed his second and third field goals of the game.

If Colgate wanted to respond, it would have to be via a 20-point fourth quarter rally. Unfortunately for the Raiders, they were not playing the Miami Dolphins and a late comeback would be difficult against a Georgetown team that had stumped them all day.

It got worse when the twenty point deficit became a thirty point deficit. Just under three minutes into the fourth quarter, Georgetown picked off first-year quarterback Ryan Smith for an in­terception return touchdown. Weiss then finished out his strong outing with his fourth field goal for the Hoyas, after a Raider punt was blocked.

The game was lost, but Colgate did add a touchdown in the closing minutes of play. Smith found junior Chris Loo­ney for a 25-yard touchdown pass. It represented Smith’s first touchdown pass of his Colgate career. He entered play af­ter McCarney started, and he threw for 65 yards. McCarney had tossed for 90 yards and ran for 46 yards before Smith replaced him in the third quarter.

The loss brought Colgate back to 4-4, but this weekend’s match-up with Le­high offers an opportunity for redemp­tion. Lehigh is currently sitting at 6-1 and remains unbeaten in Patriot League play. The competition is slated to begin at noon in Andy Kerr Statdium.
