This past Friday night at Starr Rink, the Colgate women’s ice hockey team de­feated the Yale Bulldogs 1-0. Junior goal­tender Kimberly Sass put two marks in the Colgate record book as she recorded her fifth shutout of the season and third straight at home. The lone Colgate goal was scored by sophomore forward Brittany Phillips. The next afternoon the Raid­ers secured a weekend sweep when they defeated Brown 4-1.

Friday’s game started off with both teams competing hard. As the first period continued, Colgate found its rhythm and composure, allowing the Raiders’ offense to take control of the ice. ‘Gate had pos­session of the puck for the majority of the first frame and created numerous scor­ing opportunities. However, Colgate was unable to find the back of the net, and both teams ended the first frame without a score.

In the second period, the Raiders came out on the ice hungry for the first goal of the game, firing a series of close shots on goal. However, the Bulldogs soon re­turned the favor with a series of scoring opportunities of their own, but, similar to the first period, neither team could get on the scoreboard. With the pace of play quickening on both ends of the ice, the intensity of searching for the first goal grew as well. In the final minutes of the second period, Colgate had a series of close attempts and found success at the 16:21 mark. Sophomore forward Jenna Klynstra passed the puck to Phillips off a face-off who then blasted the puck into the Bull­dogs’ net, giving the Raiders the 1-0 lead in the game.

With the momentum of the first goal, Colgate was eager to secure a two-goal advantage. Neither team was able to find success in the final minutes of the game despite an aggressive 20 minutes of hockey from both teams and a series of close scor­ing chances. The Raiders, proving to be the stronger team, secured their fifth shut­out win of the season.

The next day, on Saturday evening, the Colgate women’s hockey team had its second victory of the weekend with a 4-1 triumph over the Brown Bears.

Senior co-captains Jacquie Colborne and Jessi Waters as well as Phillips each secured two points for Colgate. Colborne scored the game-winning goal and had an assist and Waters had a goal and an assist as well. Phillips scored the remaining two goals.

Colgate came out on the ice ready to dominate the Brown Bears, starting right off the bat by playing aggressive hockey and attacking the Bears’ net with five quick shots in the first few minutes of play. As the period progressed, the Raid­ers continued to outshoot Brown. Colgate was rewarded with a goal at the 6:47 mark when Phillips netted the puck off a deflec­tive shot attempt made by junior defender Amanda Kirwan during a power play to give the Raiders the 1-0 advantage.

Throughout the half, the Raiders created the majority of the scoring opportunities, but were unable to get the puck past Brown’s goaltender. Then, with just one minute left in the period, Klynstra passed the puck across the ice to Col­borne, who hammered it home to give Colgate a 2-0 lead.

The second frame started off with Brown having the upper hand. The team opened play with an extra player on the ice due to a Colgate penalty that had carried into the sec­ond period. However, the Raiders continued to attack the Bears’ net aggressively and at the 10:32 mark found a third goal when Phillips picked up a pass from sophomore defender Jessica Hootz and fired the puck into the net. This was Phillips’s second goal of the game, giving her team a 3-0 advantage.

The final 20 minutes of play differed from the first two, as Brown created the majority of the scoring opportunities. The Bears came out playing hard and searching for a goal. Brown’s wish was answered when Alena Polenska scored a goal just 3:24 into play to put the score at 3-1. The Raiders were able to find a fourth goal from Waters, however, with the help of Colborne. Although Brown had several close attempts at goal, continuing to threaten Colgate’s net, the Raiders were able to hold the Bears off to secure the 4-1 win.

The Colgate women’s hockey team will play its final two regular season games when it travels to Harvard this Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday Saturday. These two games will help decide if the Raiders, who currently sit in a tie for sev­enth place in the league, will advance to the ECAC Hockey playoffs at the end of the month.
