The Colgate women’s lacrosse team defeated Navy 10-4 in Annapolis on Saturday to increase its chances of obtaining the Patriot League regular season championship intact. With the win, the Raiders are in second place in the conference with a 3-0 record, one half game behind 4-0 Bucknell.

The first goal of the game came six minutes into the first half. Colgate junior attacker Brie Moran scored on a free position shot to put her team ahead 1-0, a lead that Colgate would not relinquish throughout the rest of the game. A little over six minutes later, at the 12:31 mark, the Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 as senior captain Molly Carroll scored an unassisted goal.

By this point, the Raiders were thoroughly dominating their rival, depriving them from getting on the board. Less than three minutes later it was Carroll who scored once again unassisted to give Colgate a 3-0 advantage. Two minutes later, at the 18:08 mark of the half, the Raider onslaught continued as junior midfielder Meghan Lawler scored the game’s fourth goal.

The Midshipmen finally got on the board with 19 minutes left in the half. Their relief was short-lived however, as Moran scored two goals in the last eight minutes of the frame to give her team a commanding 6-1 lead going into halftime. First-year goalie Christina Roa was happy with the team’s play on Saturday.

“We played sixty minutes as a team, a full lacrosse game,” Roa said. “Everyone played really well and we really came together.”

Though Navy opened the scoring at the 1:47 mark of the second half, the Raiders were determined to not let the Midshipmen get any closer. Colgate scored three goals in the span of seven minutes to stretch its lead to 9-2. First-year midfielder Courtney Miller scored the Raiders’ seventh goal of the night and her 21st of the year at the 3:59 mark. Minutes later, senior captain Ashley Didio scored her 19th and 20th goals of the year to essentially put the game out of reach.

In the second half of the frame, the Midshipmen put forth a valiant effort to comeback, scoring twice, but were unable to overcome the seven-goal deficit. ‘Gate scored a late goal to put the final tally at 10-4.

Moran led the team with three goals in the game, while Roa had an outstanding performance in net, stopping eight of the twelve shots that went her way. The first-year and Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week has had an impressive campaign thus far, for which she credits her teammates and the coaching staff.

“Everyone on the team has been very supportive of me and pushed me to be the best player I can be,” Roa said. “The coaching staff has also challenged me and given me the confidence I need in order to play to my potential.”

Senior Maddie Kearns also took home an award, as she was named the Patriot League Defender of the Week.

The team realizes what it needs to do to be successful throughout the rest of the season, and appears headed in the right direction.

“We need to stay focused and continue playing as a team because the more we win, the more confident we will be during the Patriot League Tournament and later when we face the teams in the NCAA Tournament if we win the Patriot League title,” Roa said. “I know that if we play sixty minutes of good lacrosse we can do very well in the NCAA Tournament.”

The Raiders will now host Lafayette on Saturday at Tyler’s Field at 1 p.m.
