Two PL Foes Take Down Women’s B-Ball
The women’s basketball team lost two more Patriot League games last week to remain winless in conference play. Against Bucknell, Colgate was never in the game and lost 88-57. The Raiders hung around against Holy Cross, but that first win remained elusive and the team lost, 63-53.
Last Saturday, the women’s basketball team raised awareness for breast cancer during Think Pink Weekend. Head Coach Pam Bass pitched in one dollar to the Central New York Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for every fan that showed up. She also made a moving speech at halftime about how breast cancer has effected her family. Fans also received free shirts commerorating the successful weekend. Unfortunately, the Raiders continued to lose.
The game with Bucknell began evenly with the two teams trading several baskets. Although the Bison opened a nine-point gap with the score 15-6, the Raiders came back and came within four points of taking the lead due to the solid play by sophomore Katie Garman. Unfortunately, center Hope Foster and the Bison opened a huge 19-point gap at halftime thanks to some stellar defense and marksman-like three-point shooting. Colgate was unable to break through their opponents’ defense and lost a lot of points on turnovers.
The second half lacked suspense, as Bucknell gradually increased its lead and did not let the Raiders get closer than 21 points. The Bison shot a remarkable 24 out of 32 free throws and 49.2 percent from the floor to secure victory. Colgate shot 43 percent from the field, but struggled finding open shots. First-year Georgia Gier was the team’s best player as she scored 11 points and had four rebounds.
“We got hurt by rebounding and foul shots,” Bass said.
Colgate celebrated Senior Day before Wednesday evening’s game against Holy Cross, and the Raiders inched closer to victory, but they just lacked a little luck at crucial points in the game. The game began with Colgate in the lead, but the Crusaders went on an 8-0 run and opened a small gap that the Raiders never closed. Both teams had low shooting percentages, but Colgate was out-shot from long-range as Holy Cross made five more three-pointers, which proved decisive for the outcome of the game. At the beginning of the second half, the Crusaders opened a 22-point lead with an impressive 15-4 run. Although the Raiders made a valiant comeback, they ran out of time and lost 63-53. First-year Krista Moser led the Raiders, earning her first double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds.
Colgate now will travel to Navy in the last game of the regular season.
