Track Gears Up for Class of ’32 Invitational
The men’s track and field team kicked their season off right by taking the top spot in three events at Navy’s Crowell Open on January 12. Senior Thomas Dilworth led the way with a 50.73 victory in the 400-meter dash. Classmate Andy Holway joined Dilworth atop the podium after he captured the 500 meter dash title in 1:06.50. The third victory came from the 4x400m relay team with a time of 3:24.40; six seconds faster than the nearest competitor.
Also showcasing notable performances were seniors Harrison Newman and Terrence Dilworth. Dilworth grabbed third place with his 7.07 performance in the 60 meter dash while Newman delivered a 6′ 2.25″ high jump for runner-up honors.
Moving on in their season, the men headed to Ithaca for the Upstate Challenge last Saturday. All eyes were on sophomore Lyle Tolli as he sped to victory in the 3,000 meters. His time of 8:30.71 carried a two-second advantage over his nearest competitor and came close to qualifying him for the ECAC Championships.
Aiding Colgate’s men in their sixth place finish was Thomas Dilworth yet again. who gained personal records in the 200 and 500 meters. He accrued second place in the 200 meter with a time of 22.50 while his 1:06.32 500-meter time yielded fourth overall. The team rounded out their scores with fifth place showings from the 4×800 and 4×400 relay teams, and senior Jeff Tufts also took fifth with a 2:41.43 1,000 meter time.
The women’s team continued the excellent performances in Ithaca with a fifth place finish overall. Junior Kristen Kiraly took the lead capturing third in the mile with a time of 5:27.54.
“I decided to push a little harder when I got tired and just kicked it in before I normally would in a race,” Kiraly said. “In the end, it paid off with how I placed in the race.”
The 4×80 relay team captured the bronze with a time of 10:32.57. First-year Michelle Miller stole fourth place in the 400-meter at 1:01.86.
Rounding out scores were three fifth-place finishes by the 4×400 relay, and sophomores Lauren Abuouf and Ashley Niness. The relay crossed the line in 4:18.29. Abuouf’s weight throw was recorded at 12.65 meters, while Niness’s 500-meter time clocked in at 1:22.37.
Both Raider teams return to action this weekend on their home turf inside the Sanford Field House for the Class of ’32 Invitational.
“It’s really amazing how the field house is transformed for this all-day event. While runners are sprinting around the track, jumpers will be competing in the middle of the turf while throwers will be at the other end. There is just so much going on, and Colgate will be at the top of the competition,” Kiraly said. “It promises to be an exciting day!”
All people on campus are invited to cheer on the Raiders when the meet begins at 11:00 am on Saturday at Sanford.
