Streaming Spotlights: Candy Jar, Sweet Sweet Teen Romance
Netflix originals are gaining more popularity, especially as the streaming service announced its intention to release 90 films a year. Bigger budget films like Birdbox and Murder Mystery have been viral hits with high viewership ratings; lower budget films like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before have been fan favorites as well. Personally, I didn’t understand the hype with the latter; I’m here to propose another Netflix high school romantic comedy, albeit very underrated: Candy Jar.
It’s cute, sweet and refreshing. The story revolves around two seniors who are at the top of their class. Their rivalry rises when they’re forced to be co-presidents of the debate team, but it soon recedes in the form of a friendship. Yes, the formula itself is a cliche, but the characters and their struggles are not. This is one of the only times I’ve seen a high school romance where neither of the leads is a jock or “queen bee.” Plus, their dream-college-pursuit reminded me of the time I once hoped I would attend Dartmouth, maybe Brown. If that’s not enough, the charming leads are backed up by hefty supporting actors, including Uzo Aduba, Christina Hendricks and Helen Hunt.
Why Candy Jar hasn’t received the same attention as TATBILB, I’ll never understand. It’s such a good depiction of senior year anxieties and the idea that in time, any two people can find common ground. So I encourage you all to dig up this treasure and enjoy an uplifting 90 minutes.
