The Women’s Softball team took on Siena College in a two-game battle last week on Wednesday, April 24. Senior infielder Meghan Romero was the hero in the first game with a walk-off single in the ninth inning to contribute to the 5-4 victory. Colgate started off slowly as Siena scored three runs in the top of the third. However, despite being held to just one hit for the first three innings, Romero was able to spark change. She had a three-run fourth with a leadoff single up the middle and then junior infielder Nicole Rounsavill lined a single across the infield and then was able to score on a single by junior catcher Virginia Irby. This put the score to 3-3 and the Raiders were right back in the game.

Another key play was made when first-year infielder Morgan Farrah had a single, followed by first-year outfielder McKenna Saunders crossing the plate as a pinch-runner after an RBI single from sophomore utility Christiana Cottrell. On the final play of the day, Romero hit a hard ground ball past first base and Cottrell was able to reach home place to score the winning run. The Raiders clinched a 5-4 victory.

Coming off of this big win, the Raiders were ready for game two against Siena. They opened up with a strong lead; Irby scored in the first off of a big hit by Rounsavill and then hit an RBI triple in a four-run second. This incredible play let the Raiders pull further ahead to 5-0. First-year pitcher Kaitlyn Borruso performed well for the Raiders and earned her first career save, with a scoreless seventh inning to lead the Raiders to an 8-5 victory and a doubleheader sweep.

On Sunday, the Raiders faced Lafayette and earned yet another sweep with 3-2 and 9-1 victories. The Raiders got up early, as Irby had a big hit on the first pitch she saw that se- cured a single for Romero. Sophomore outfielder Mia Guevarra then had a two-run single to the left followed by an RBI double by Rounsavill–these two great plays put Colgate ahead 3-0. Despite the small comeback by Lafayette, the Raiders were able to pull ahead and come out with a 3-2 victory.

Colgate came out with a lot of energy for game two against Lafayette and was ready to challenge them to earn yet another win. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Romero was hit by a pitch for the second time and Rounsavill got a walk just before Farrah hit a three-run homer. Colgate continued to secure the lead and Romero ended the game with a two-run double to put the Raiders up 9-1 and secure the victory.

Colgate’s head coach Marissa Lamison-Myers commented on the team’s performance.

“Today was a great day for our pitching staff. Kaitlyn again came in and shut their offense down in Game one and Jess did the same thing in Game two. It was nice to see our bats come alive with big hits from Morgan [Farrah] and Meghan [Romero] down the stretch. I couldn’t be prouder of this group for how they handled this weekend and today,” she said.

Colgate will next host Lehigh on Saturday, May 4, in their final series of the regular season.
