Diving Right In – Sophomores Break League Record
Overall, the Colgate women’s swimming and diving team finished a mediocre ninth out of fifteen teams in the Terrapin Cup Invitational. However, the Raiders relay team of sophomores Beverly Walker, Ashley Bottger, Emily Murphy and Lisa Marchi made Patriot League history. The relay team finished with a time of 3:25.70, breaking both the team and league records by .90 seconds.
The men’s swimming and diving team finished ninth out of twelve teams in the Terrapin Cup Invitational. Despite the somewhat disappointing finish, many individuals on the team stepped up with impressive performances. Senior tri-captain Dave Hill finished the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:09.79, which ranks eighth in school history. He finished 20th in the race with the time. Junior Zach Whitman and senior captains Zach Grobengeiser and Greg Dunlavey finished 13th in the 400 meter relay with a time of 3:09.76. Sophomore Rich McMahon put forth a personal best time of 16:47.83 in the 1650 free, good for 21st in the race. In the diving events, sophomore Stephen Haskin placed seventh in the three-meter diving competition with 214.25 points.
In addition, the diving team recently added Joe McGovern, a walk-on first-year phenom with an abundance of raw talent and potential. With his gregarious good looks and suave nature, McGovern looks to inspire the team and contribute to a second half turnaround.
“Coach Matt Leone is the real inspiration here,” McGovern said. “Without him, I don’t know where we would be. We have a very positive outlook on the rest of the season.”
The women’s and men’s team are off until January 3, when both teams will travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for winter training. They will resume competition on January 13 when they travel to Pennsylvania to face Bucknell and Army.
