Last weekend, the men and women of Colgate’s cross country teams headed to the Bronx for the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships.

Leading the men was senior Michael Hanlon with an 11th place finish. Hanlon clocked a 10k time of 32:04, helping Colgate’s men finish in 20th place out of 34 teams. His finish placed him just one spot away from automatic qualifications for the NCAA Championships.

“The toughest thing about the race was that the temperature was in the 60’s when we had been training in much colder temperatures for the past month or so” Hanlon said. “I got pretty dehydrated out there, which really affected my race.”

Following Hanlon was senior Andrew Isabel, finishing 89th out of 230 with a time of 34:09. Less than a minute later came the next Raider runners. First-year Bryan Kretschmer and sophomore Emmett Weatherford finished the race in 34:50 and 34:54, respectively. With a time of 35:28, senior Scott DeRoo rounded out Colgate’s scorers.

Senior Liz Crowley led the women’s team with a 6k time of 23:22.4. Crowley locked herself in 74th place out of the 228 runners competing. Following her by twenty seconds was sophomore Kristen Kiraly, who placed 91st, and senior Meaghan McAnaney crossed the line ten runners later.

The Colgate pack was rounded out by sophomores Caitlin English and Jessica Kielty, junior Kathryn Marvel, and senior Hannah Failing.

“At Van Courtland the pack always goes out fast for the first mile and a halfwhich are very flat,” Crowley said. “After that you run through the backhills,which take their tollboth physically and mentally and that is where you need to remain tough.”

The men and women will finish their season this Saturday when they retake the Bronx course for the ECAC Championships.
