Men’s Lax Falls In Patriot League Opener
A week after posting its highest goal total of the season in a victory against Saint Joseph’s, the Colgate men’s lacrosse team faltered in Florida, giving up six consecutive goals in a Patriot League loss to Navy. One week after suffering a last-second defeat to Vermont, the Raiders came stumbling out of the gates against Saint Joseph’s on March 12. The Hawks got on the board first, beating junior goalie Andrew Jarolimek just 51 seconds into the game. Saint Joseph’s extended their lead with a goal at the 2:23 mark of the first quarter. The game stayed 2-0 until the 9:07 mark, when sophomore attack Brendan Hurley found the back of the net off a pass from classmate Rob Ryan. Later, junior attack Brian Robinson took a pass from classmate Rob Trasolini to tie the game at two heading into the second quarter. The Robinson goal seemed to push the momentum to the Raiders’ side, as Colgate scored four consecutive goals in the second quarter. After Robinson added his second tally of the game at 3:29 of the period, Hurley put home a pass from senior Matt Saxon to make the score 4-2. First-year Matt Lalli notched a man-up goal and Trasolini added his second of the game to round out the Raider scoring before halftime. The quartet of Ryan, Hurley, Lalli and Robinson continued to be effective for the remainder of the game, as the Raiders outscored Saint Joseph’s, 8-4, en route to a 14-7 victory. “Saint Joseph’s was definitely a good game for us,” head coach Jim Nagle explained. “It was offensively our biggest output of the season.”In addition to the regular Raider contributors, some greenhorns added to the victory in Philadelphia. Sophomore attack Andy Summersgill tallied his first collegiate goal, and two underclassman goaltenders were able to see action. Jarolimek, who finished with 11 saves, was relieved with less than three minutes remaining by first-year Andrew Bevan, who recorded two saves in less than two minutes of action. Bevan’s classmate, Denis Cronin, also spent 40 seconds in net for the Raiders. “It was nice to see both guys play,” Nagle said. “It was good getting them in the game for some experience.”A week after their thrashing of Saint Joseph’s, the Raiders traveled to Florida during Spring Break to take on defending Patriot League champion and national runner-up Navy. After losing two games to the Midshipmen last season by a combined score of 36-11, the Raiders came out with a vengeance in the first period. After an early Navy goal, Lalli cashed in on a man-up opportunity and tied the game at one with 12:27 left in the first quarter. Jarolimek and the Raider defense gave up two more goals before Robinson beat the Navy goaltender after receiving a pass from Trasolini, sending the game to the second period with Navy leading, 3-2. After halftime, however, it was all Navy. The Midshipmen pummeled Jarolimek with 17 shots while the Navy defense held the Raiders without a shot. After scoring a triad of goals, the Midshipmen held a 9-5 lead heading into the final session. “In the third quarter, [Navy] simply controlled possession of the game,” Nagle said. Navy kept strong throughout the fourth quarter, allowing only a Hurley goal en route to an 11-6 victory. The defeat, Colgate’s first Patriot League decision of the year, left Colgate with a 3-2 record on the season. The Raiders host the sixth-ranked Army Black Knights tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Tyler’s Field.
