Previewing Upcoming Sporting Events this Spring
Spring is just around the corner, although it may not seem like it up in chilly Hamilton, New York. With spring comes arguably the best time of the year in the sports world. And I can almost feel it. I was sitting on my dorm room futon this past Saturday, switching back and forth between many top 25 college basketball games and the WGC Mexico Golf Championship. I was filled with excitement because they were the first taste of what’s to come this Spring.
The best event of the spring is March Madness. Sixty-eight of the nation’s best college basketball teams will come together in March and compete for a national title. March Madness is one of the most fun and craziest sporting events around. Full of upsets, cinderella teams, bracket busters, buzzer beaters and more: Anything can happen. And that’s why it’s awesome. Last year, the madness did not disappoint. No.16 seed UMBC beat No.1 seed Virginia, the first time a No.16 seed had ever won a game (previously 0-135 all time), and No.11 seed Loyola Chicago went to the Final Four, just the fifth double digit seeded team to make it to the final weekend.
One of the best parts of March Madness is making your bracket, because anyone can do it, whether or not they are college basketball fans. And although my bracket gets busted every year, as does everyone else’s (odds of a perfect bracket are one in 9.2 quintillion), I will still deeply analyze each of my picks because that is part of the fun. Will the blue blood favorite Duke win it all with Zion Williamson, or will a Kentucky, a Gonzaga or even a Nevada take home the trophy? Anything can happen, and the madness awaits this March. I, along with college basketball fans everywhere, cannot wait.
Another great event come this spring, and one of my personal favorites, is the Masters. One of the reasons why the Masters is so great is because it is built around tradition. The drive down Magnolia Lane, the picture perfect green golf course contrasted with the pine straw, the Green Jacket, the par-3 contest and a lot more. Watching the tournament almost feels like you are there.
A highlight of the Masters each year is Jim Nantz’s smooth, calming voice up in the CBS booth, and there is nothing better than sitting on the couch all day on Masters Sunday and taking it in. It’s a tradition unlike any other, as Nantz says, and is a highlight of the springtime. Tiger Woods is looking to complete his comeback and win another Masters, which would be his first victory at Augusta since 2005, in what would be an unbelievable story. Other favorites are 2015 winner Jordan Spieth, who always plays Augusta well, and Dustin Johnson, who is hot right now coming off his win at the WGC Mexico.
Lastly, the NFL Draft happens in late April. Since the NFL season has been over for a few weeks now, the draft has been a hot topic of discussion. Teams look at this year’s class to either rebuild, fill in small gaps or provide some depth for their rosters. The Arizona Cardinals are on the clock and are expected to take Nick Bosa, the dominant, athletic defensive end out of Ohio State. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has been a big story as well, as he chose to enter the NFL Draft instead of pursuing a career in the MLB as the sixth overall pick for the Oakland A’s. There are a lot of questions about where he will go, whether he has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback and more.
The spring is an exciting time for sports, and these three events in particular won’t disappoint. Sports fans are dying for spring, and before we know it, it will be Selection Sunday and the start of the best few months in sports.
