Potential 2020/2021 Golden Boot Winners

Every Premier League season is decorated with the goal-scoring talents from players who come from all across the globe. It’s simple: to win, you must score. As a result, players that rule the statistical charts in the ‘GOALS’ column emerge, earning reputations as some of the best players and talismen in the world.

The Golden Boot is the Premier League’s award to the top goal-scorer in the league each season. While it’s represented in a trophy by a small, golden cleat, it represents more than an annual award. Instead, it is one that reflects the talents of some of the best goal-scorers in the most competitive league in the world. With the 2020/2021 season underway, let’s take a look at some of the favorites for the Golden Boot award this season, and a potential dark horse.

Son Heung-Min

Whether he scores with his right foot, left foot or with his head, no one is becoming more of a consistent goal threat than Tottenham Hotspur’s South Korean winger Son Heung-Min. After scoring four goals against Southampton F.C. and another two against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Heung-Min already has six goals through four matches. His chemistry with striker Harry Kane seems to be strengthening game by game, as the pair is forming a lethal one-two punch for the team from North London in the early stages of the season. With Jose Mourinho, the ‘special one’, at the helm, look for Heung-Min to continue to bang in goals at an out-of-this-world rate.

Mohammed Salah

You can almost hear the Liverpool faithful singing his name from the Kop stand … ‘Mo Salah! Mo Salah! Mo Salah!’ (that is if the Premier League allows fans to attend, but that topic is for a whole other article). Regardless of who is singing his name, Mohamed Salah’s consistent efficiency in front of the net since his arrival to the Premier League in 2017 has been nothing short of spectacular. To no surprise, he has continued to perform as Liverpool’s talisman this season. After scoring a hat-trick in Liverpool’s opening game of the season against Leeds United, Salah became the first Liverpool player to score in four consecutive league openers since his move four years ago from A.S. Roma. With five goals already in his first four matches this season, Salah remains a favorite to top the scoring charts as part of Liverpool’s deadly attack.

Jamie Vardy

These days, it seems as if Jamie Vardy is having a party every year now. The Leicester City frontman has been a force so far this season for the high-flying Foxes, as Vardy’s five goals through four matches have the team from the East Midlands sitting third in the table. After winning the Premier League Golden Boot last season at the age of 33, he’s shown no signs of slowing down. His hat-trick against Pep Guadiola’s Manchester City proves that age is just a number, as his current form has him as a favorite to lead the league in goal scoring for the second consecutive year.

The One to Watch: Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The Everton F.C. rebuild under Carlo Ancellotti is fully underway. The blue half of Merseyside currently sits atop of the Premier League with four wins and zero losses. Although the likes of James Rodríguez, Richarlison and Andre Gomes have graced Goodison Park with their talents this year, forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has stolen the spotlight in the early weeks of the season. Fresh off a debut goal with England’s National Team on October 10, Calvert-Lewin has bossed the Premier League this season, giving promise to what is turning out to be a historic season individually for both club and country. With six goals through four matches, the Evertonian forward is in the form of his life. He just can’t stop scoring, with many giving him plaudits for his early-season play. Although the season just recently started, look for Calvert-Lewin to remain in the picture for the Golden Boot award.
