On February 18, many students gathered together in the Class of 1965 Area to watch the “Spring into Spring” Ice Show. The event was a great way to celebrate both the glory of the Olympics and the beginnings of warmer weather. Members of the Colgate figure skating team presented an enthusiastic and exciting performance, featuring the kids of the Learn to Skate program as well. The show opened with “The Lion King Medley” and an adorable feature by the kids showing off their newly learned tricks and talents. This was followed with a performance by Colgate’s synchronized skating team to a 1920s musical medley.

Colgate has had a synchronized skating team since the figure skating team was founded. 

“I absolutely love being a part of the Colgate figure skating team. I skated synchronized throughout high school, so it’s amazing to get to skate on a team in college as well,” first-year Shelby Stevens said. 

There are 11 members of the 2017-2018 Colgate figure skating club. The team currently competes at the Open Collegiate level in the Eastern Conference. Recently, the Colgate figure skating team placed second at the Empire State games in Lake Placid. In addition, the team placed second at the Connecticut Classic. On March 24 and 25, the team will be skating in the Clinton Ice Show.

The “Spring Into Spring” show also included a feature dedicated to the infamous Olympic scandal involving Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan with a skate by first-years Ellie Kagel and Lucy Briody titled, “I, Tonya.” The show continued on with singles performances by first-years Julia Dowd and Ellie Kagel, and seniors Alana Resnick and Lizzy Weingart. These short programs were followed by a pair performance by sophomores Grace DiRisio and Haley McGloon to a team favorite, “Party in the USA.” 

“It is so great that we have such talent on campus,” first-year Sarah Alling said after watching the show.

“We’ve had an amazing season this year and we’ve won two silver medals. I think it’s incredible that we compete against and sometimes win against teams that have coaches and choreographers, while our team and program is coached and choreographed by a senior on the skating team, Alana Resnick. The group of girls skating are absolutely amazing and that’s what it’s really about. Synchronized is about skating and succeeding alongside your friends, and I’m so proud to get to skate with these ladies who are each incredible skaters in their own right,” Stevens said. 

The show concluded with a performance by the three senior skaters – Alana Resnick, Lizzy Weingart and Liz Arenare – as a finale to their four years on campus, ending with a sweet farewell for all the memories made during their time on the Colgate figure skating team.
