Champions League Round of 16: First Leg Recap and Second Leg Preview
In the previous two weeks, we have witnessed the first leg fixtures of the Champions League round of 16. Here is a review of each of the matches, and a preview for the second leg matches.
Barcelona 1-4 PSG
PSG star Kylian Mbappe went off against Lionel Messi and co. at Camp Nou, a further indication of his rise to becoming one of the best players in the world at just 22 years of age. Look for PSG to cement their place in the quarters with a similarly dominant performance in the return fixture, not a repeat of their “La Remontada” collapse in 2017.
Second Leg Prediction: 2-1 PSG
Leipzig 0-2 Liverpool
Although Liverpool has had their domestic struggles, they were able to produce a solid performance against their German opposition. Leipzig should be an easy match for Liverpool on paper, but given their recent Prem form, Reds fans can’t be too complacent for this match.
Second Leg Prediction: 2-1 Liverpool
Porto 2-1 Juventus
Probably the biggest surprise of all the results, the Italian giants were held to a single goal and beaten by the Portuguese champions. Although Juventus have struggled in the Champions League in recent years, look for a response by the Old Lady on their home turf. That away goal helps massively.
Second Leg Prediction: 1-0 Juventus
Sevilla 2-3 Dortmund
Norwegian forward Erling Haaland continued his ascent to stardom with two goals to help Dortmund mount a comeback win in the first leg. Dortmund’s attack was electric, especially in the first half, and Sevilla weren’t able to contain the likes of Haaland and young English winger Jadon Sancho. With three away goals, Dortmund are in a commanding position to go through to the quarterfinals.
Second Leg Prediction: 3-1 Dortmund
Atletico 0-1 Chelsea
Chelsea continued their impressive form under Thomas Tuchel by grinding to a 1-0 win and will host Athletico back at Stamford Bridge for the second leg. The away goal is big for the Blues, but 1-0 is a slim margin to hold on to.
Second Leg Prediction: 1-1
Lazio 1-4 Bayern
Bayern pounced on Lazio’s mistakes from the very start, beginning with a poor backpass that Robert Lewandowski punished. The win extends Bayern’s UCL unbeaten streak to 18 matches, and the German giants look like an early frontrunner to win the Champions League and defend their crown.
Second Leg Prediction: 2-0 Bayern
Atalanta 0-1 Real Madrid
While not playing like the Real Madrid that we have become used to seeing, Los Blancos were able to defeat 10-man Atalanta with a late goal. Missing several players due to injury, Real scraped by, but the result is all that matters. Nevertheless, the tie is still anyone’s.
Second Leg Prediction: 2-0 Real Madrid
Monchengladbach 0-2 Man City
Man City, by now the Premier League champions-in-waiting, cruised by Monchengladbach on their way to 19 straight matches unbeaten in all competitions. Bernardo Silva’s class was evident with a goal and an assist. Man City surely favor their chances to go all the way this year.
Second Leg Prediction: 3-1 Man City
