The Colgate softball team traveled to Boston University this past weekend for a Patriot League weekend series. On Saturday, the teams played a doubleheader, and they faced off again on Sunday to celebrate BU’s Senior Day. It was a tough weekend for the Raiders, who fell in all three games against the Terriers. BU, who is currently ranked second in the Patriot League and are defending champions, entered the series riding a high, following a nine-game conference winning streak. It was a difficult test for the Raiders, who played a doubleheader split against Syracuse last week.

The first of three games in the series was a heartbreaker for the Raiders, who lost 7-9 in a ten-inning game. Boston tied the game at 7-7 after Colgate maintained a lead for much of the game. Over the first three innings, Colgate built a 5-2 lead which they maintained for much of the game. In the top of the sixth, first-year Virginia Irby scored to make it 6-2. In the bottom of the sixth, Boston rallied to make the score 6-5, which Colgate responded to the next inning when sophomore Baillie Jorth brought in an RBI with a sacrifice bunt. BU battled to tie the score, sending the game into overtime and then taking the win when junior Jilee Schanda hit a two-run home run.

Saturday’s second game was not as close, as the Terriers took home a 6-1 win. Within the first three innings, Boston scored three runs to build a solid lead. Colgate was unable to make it onto the board until sophomore Meghan Romero made it home after hitting a single and rounding the bases off Terrier errors at the top of the sixth. Despite a single from first-year Nicole Rounsavill and a double from Miller, Boston clinched the lead in the bottom of the sixth, extending the margin to 6-1. Colgate was unable to answer back, which led to BU’s second victory of the day.

Following Saturday’s losses, Colgate struggled to come out strong on Sunday. The third and last game of the series against Boston University was a clean sweep for the Terriers with a 6-0 victory. Boston set the tone in the first inning, creating a 4-0 lead that the Raiders were unable to respond to.

Throughout the first four innings, the Raiders scraped together five hits but were unable to put any runs on the board. In the fourth inning, Boston added two more runs, bringing them to a 6-0 lead. Neither team would score again for the remainder of the game. Despite the disappointing losses, Rounsavill recorded a team-best two hits and finished the day two-for-three. First-year Jessica Hay saw action in the final two innings of the game, leaving the Terriers hitless with two strikeouts.

“We are working hard this week to finish this season strong and to hopefully take this momentum into next year. We have a lot of potential and are looking forward to seeing what next year brings,” Jorth said.

At the close of the weekend, Colgate’s record moved to 12-27-1 overall and 2-13 in the league, while Boston improved to 21-25 overall and 12-3 in the league. Colgate will close out their season next weekend in a three-game series at home against Lehigh, who is currently ranked first in the league. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Saturday, which will begin

at noon.
