Men & Women’s Tennis Close Out Regular Season Play: Both Teams Conclude Spring Season with Winning Records

Lauren Hyland and her doubles partner Hannah Fleckenstein won their match against SUNY Cortland, contributing to the Raider sweep over the Red Dragons last Wednesday.

Colgate’s tennis program had a successful year, with both the men’s and women’s team closing out their seasons with winning records this past weekend. The men finished their season with a 10-8 record and traveled to Maryland on Friday, April 21 for the Patriot League Championships, while the women closed their regular season with an overall record of 9-8. They will travel to Pennsylvania this Friday, April 28, for their Patriot League Tournament.

Friday, April 21, the men’s team faced the Boston University Terriers in the quarter finals of the Patriot League Championship tournament for the second time this season, hoping to redeem their 2-4 defeat on April 16. Despite the Raiders hard fought battle, they were ultimately handed a 4-0 loss to end the season. The team of sophomore Noah Rosenblat and senior Bobby Alter netted a 7-5 victory for the number two seed doubles match. Another doubles team composed of senior Win Reynolds and first-year Kun Tan battled their match all the way to the end, but the Terriers were able to hold on to the win to earn the collective doubles point.

Though the Raiders clinched the first seed and battled the second seed during a tie breaker in singles, Boston University notched victories in third, fourth and fifth singles to secure the win. Even though the Raiders  lost in the quarterfinals, they finished their season with a winning overall record of 10-8.

Wednesday, April 19, the women’s team hosted the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons, clinching a 7-0 victory for the final match of their regular season. The Raiders swept the doubles point with triumphs in the first, second and third seed matches. The duos of sophomore Lauren Hyland and senior Hannah Fleckenstein, as well as senior Kristie Woodbury and junior Cheyenne Brown, both won their doubles matches with scores of 6-0, while first-year Jordan Williams and senior Kaelin Brittin netted a 6-1 victory to secure the doubles competition. In the singles matches, No. 1 seed Hyland and No. 4 seed Fleckenstein both snagged 6-1, 6-0 set wins. The Raiders No. 2 seed, first-year Lauren O’Brien, and No. 3 seed Williams both earned victories with two set scores of 6-0. At fifth and sixth singles, junior Kelly Klein and Brittin secured 8-0 set victories to sweep the singles points. The Raiders concluded their regular season with a bang and will move forward to the Patriot League Tournament Friday, April 28, with their heads held high in hopes of continuing their four game winning streak.

“It looks like we are going to play Bucknell in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament, a very good match up for us. We beat them 5-2 in the regular season, which was big for us because we lost to them 0-7 last year. This season overall has been amazing for us. We have all improved individually and are working really well together as a team,” remarked sophomore Lauren Hyland.

While the men suffered a tough loss to Boston University for the second time during the Patriot League Quarterfinals, overall they had an incredibly successful season and prepare to work harder as they move into next years’ season. The women’s team had an incredible finish to their regular season and move forward into the Patriot League Tournament with momentum and confidence as they prepare to face Bucknell in the first round.
