This past weekend, the Colgate men’s hockey team was on the road for back-to-back games. Traveling first to Potsdam, New York, the Raiders fell to the Clarkson Golden Knights on Friday night, by a final score of 3-0. On Saturday, the Raiders faced a quick turnaround as they traveled to Canton, New York to take on Saint Lawrence University, who is currently ranked seventeenth in the country. Following a tough battle, Saturday’s game eventually ended in a tie by a score of 1-1.

The Raiders refused to go down without a fight on Friday night, outshooting the Golden Knights 23-19. Senior forward Emilio Audi and junior forward Sebastian Weberg led the team with four shots on net each. On the defensive end, senior captain Jake Kulevich blocked a game-high of three shots, while senior goaltender Charlie Finn denied a total of 16 shots throughout the game. Junior forward Mike Panowyk led Colgate with eight face-offs; however, despite the visiting team’s best efforts, Clarkson won the face-off battle 25-22.

Following the tough loss to the Golden Knights, the Raiders set their sights on the weekend’s second game against Saint Lawrence. For Raiders first-year goaltender Colton Point, the game proved to be extremely eventful, with Point saving 39 out of 40 shots made on him by the Saints. The score board was silent for the first thirty minutes of the game, as both teams struggled to tally a goal. Senior forward Tim Harrison was able to put Colgate on the board in the second period, with his tenth goal of the season. Harrison’s goal was assisted by senior defender Brett Corkey, who wrapped up a loose puck in the neutral zone, teeing up a goal-scoring opportunity with a backhand pass off the boards. 

The Colgate lead was maintained until first-year forward Alex Gilmour found the back of the net for Saint Lawrence with 6:20 left to play. While Saint Lawrence outshot Colgate in Saturday’s contest, neither team was able to capitalize on their power play opportunities, with the Raiders going 0-for-2 and the Saints going 0-for-5. On the defensive side, the Raiders blocked twenty-four shots compared to the Saints’ six.

“ECAC standings are so tight, every team is fighting for that home team advantage in the first round. Although we didn’t win, one point from St. Lawrence is big for us,” first-year forward Jared Cockrell said regarding the outcome of

the game.

After this weekend our Colgate Raiders stand 8-18-6 overall, and 6-11-3 in the ECAC. Looking ahead, Colgate men’s hockey will prepare to close out the regular season, hosting the Union College Dutchmen on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers on Saturday at 7 p.m. Saturday night’s game will be the team’s senior night.
