Colgate women’s lacrosse played a strong game against the Navy Mids on Saturday, April 9th, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Despite the Raiders’ best efforts, they were unable to counter Navy’s forceful offensive attack. Colgate ultimately fell 15-10.

The first half began with an intense back and forth between Colgate and Navy. The teams took turns taking the lead for the first 11 minutes of the game, with four goals by the Raiders and three goals by Navy. With these goals Colgate took its only lead of the game at 19:07 by one goal. However, the Mids were able to take control of the game in the last 17 minutes of the half, scoring six goals, going into halftime with a 9-5 lead.

Colgate started the second half strong, scoring three consecutive goals in the first four minutes, one off the stick of first-year defender Holly Korn and two by senior attacker Emily Peebles. With these goals, Colgate was able to go within one goal of Navy’s lead. The gap didn’t remain close for long, their spurt followed by the Mids own three goals making it a 12-8 contest. The Mids and Raiders traded goals for the remaining nineteen minutes of the half, two by Colgate and three by Navy. These goals resulted in the final score of 15-10.

Despite the Colgate loss, the game held some Raider highlights as well. Peebles matched her career high of four goals in a single game for the second time this season. Peebles was not the only Raider to score multiple points for the game; junior midfielder Isabel Kreitler pitched in two goals as well. Sophomore midfielder Haley O’Hanlon and junior midfielder Sarah Bowles finished with six draw controls each. Additionally, Korn scored her first goal of the season in the first half of the game. Colgate head coach Heather Young noted both the Raider weaknesses and achievements in the game

against Navy.

“Our draw controls were huge today. Sarah Bowles and Hayley O’Hanlon were phenomenal on the draw today. I couldn’t ask more of them. That’s why we had a great offensive output today and were able to get those 30 shots as well. Defensively, it definitely was not our game. Our defense has been pretty steady all year. Unfortunately this was not the game for them to take off,” Young said.

Peebles remains hopeful for the rest of the team’s season, focusing on the positive aspects of the game against Navy:

“Coming off of two Patriot League losses, we knew how important this game would be towards our post-season rankings. In addition, our team wanted to prove to Navy that our victory against them last year was not a mistake. We spent the week physically and mentally preparing ourselves for rivalry by

pushing each other in practice and learning the importance of the word trust. While our efforts fell short in Annapolis, I believe our team showed a lot of heart and left everything we had on that field. Our non-conference mid-week game will provide us with the opportunity to pull together as a team and complete that part of the schedule with a win before continuing with league play,” Peebles said.
