On Thursday, March 25 and Friday, March 26, the Spring Cabaret took place in the Palace Theater in downtown Hamilton. Each semester, a group of musically talented students come together to put on a musical showcase, called Cabaret, to the delight of the greater Colgate community. The show consists of sung pieces accompanied by a band of Colgate students.

The Palace Theatre was particularly packed, with students and community members lining the walls and stairwells.

Spring Cabaret requires a great deal of preparation by the directors: seniors Casey Konys, Meredith Clark, James Carino and Jen Shelton along with sophomore Colby Kingston. Auditions were held January 27 and 28. Individual and group songs were then chosen by the directors  and divided among performers. Individuals and small groups formed their own rehearsal schedules and met at various times throughout the week. The entire group rehearsed together on Sunday afternoons.

“This was the biggest Cabaret that has ever taken place at Colgate, with a total of 43 people in the cast, and it was also one of the most special because we had so many seniors (including 4 of the 5 directors) participating in their final show. We decided to make the show’s theme ‘All Grown Up’ because for so many seniors, Cabaret was an integral part of their

Colgate careers,” Kingston said.

The songs ranged from musical pieces about growing up, such as “I Know it’s Today” from Shrek the Musical, to popular songs from when current Colgate students were young, like “Hey Juliet” by LMNT. The mix of heartwarming pieces about moving on, inspiring numbers about entering the adult world and sweet songs reminiscing on the past, made for an entertaining and well-balanced show.

“My favorite song was ‘Wannabe’ by the Spice Girls because the girls not only sang really well, but they also really put on a show and

acted really well. It was overall a really entertaining number,” sophomore Lindsey Derbyshire said.

Cabaret provided a unique opportunity for students to be involved with

singing and performing at Colgate.

“I liked how there were so many different groups represented at Cabaret. I saw people who I have seen perform with a cappella groups, but I also got to hear from a ton of really talented people who I never knew could sing. I loved seeing how so many people from different Colgate groups could come together and create a really successful and fun show,” sophomore Erin Munro said.
