New York State Attorney General Launches Investigation into Hamilton Tax-Preparation Business
A village of Hamilton tax preparation, insurance and property management business is under investigation by the office of New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The Offices of Miles B. Marshall and M. Burton Marshall, Inc. will be evaluated after complaints raised to New York State law enforcement over ‘potential irregularities’ and is facing a pending lawsuit from a Hamilton resident who claims, according to Syracuse.com, that Marshall defaulted on a $300,000 loan from her.
The investigation, announced on March 28, will be conducted in coordination with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General.
“My office has been notified of multiple complaints regarding potential irregularities at the Offices of Miles B. Marshall, Inc. and M. Burton Marshall, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation of this matter,” Attorney General Letitia James said.
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is investigating this matter and working closely with the Madison County District Attorney’s Office and other partners in law enforcement.
“Learning that the people you entrust with your finances and investments may be misusing your hard-earned money is scary and concerning,” said Attorney General James via statement. “My office has been notified of multiple complaints regarding potential irregularities at the Offices of Miles B. Marshall, Inc. and M. Burton Marshall, and we are committed to conducting a thorough investigation of this matter. Our investigators will continue their work, and I urge anyone who has not already contacted law enforcement regarding this matter to reach out to my office immediately.”
The Hamilton Police Department received a report on March 7, 2023 from a “concerned participant in an ‘8% Promissory Note Fund'”, established by Marshall’s businesses, according to a March 30 article from Rick Moriarty published by Syracuse.com. It was after this report that Hamilton authorities alerted Madison County District Attorney William Gabor for assistance in investigating concerns.
The MCDA office has since ceased its investigation and turned over materials to the state Attorney General’s Office.
Marshall, 71, owns several businesses that operate out of an office at 11 Maple Ave. which include a property management firm which operates dozens of rentals throughout the Village of Hamilton and Madison County. Several homes owned by Marshall Rentals are occupied by Colgate University seniors living in off-campus housing.
Marshall declined to comment on the investigation and related activities on Tuesday, referring The Colgate Maroon-News to his attorney Jeff Dove. Dove has not responded to a request for comment.
This is a developing story.

Mr Marshall is an uncommon thief.
