On January 24, Colgate’s women’s ice hockey team played Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. The team successfully shut out the opponent with a win of 2-0. The girls’ triumph over Dartmouth is their third conference victory of the season. 

Both teams remained relatively on the defensive side for the first period of the game with no shots scored by either team. The first goal was scored by Colgate’s senior Miriam Drubel five minutes and 47 seconds into the second period. Senior Taylor Craig and first-year Lauren Wildfang teamed up to assist on the goal. Drubel scored her fourth goal of the season and 29th goal of her career. It was also her second game-winner of the year.

“The first goal was a power play goal. Our first power play in [the] first period wasn’t successful, so the second time around we kept it simple and they stuck to it,” Head Coach Greg Fargo said. 

Within the first 44 seconds of the third period, Colgate scored their second and final point, which ensured the Raiders’ victory. 

The goal was scored by sophomore Kayla Haus. Junior Nicole Gass held possession of the puck and Breanna Wilson-Bennett made a great pass to Haus. 

“It was nice for Kayla to get the goal. She was someone we moved back on the line with Megan Sullivan and she got rewarded,” Fargo said. This was Haus’ second goal of her career and first of the season. 

“It was 1-0 in the third, so it’s always good to go off a lead. The insurance goal allowed us to settle in and continue to play our game,” continued Fargo on Haus’ goal. 

Sophomore Meghan Brennan echoed her coach. 

“Our team played a very physical game against Dartmouth,” she said. “Despite a scoreless first period, the team kept working hard and eventually scored in the second period. We remained strong defensively throughout the entire game.”

On the defensive end, goal-tender Ashlynne Rando made a total of 27 saves, not allowing in a single shot for Dartmouth. Overall, Rando has allowed just 46 goals on 485 shots this season.

Fargo gave his thoughts on the team’s victory and overall performance.

“It feels good to be walking away with two points tonight after a really strong weekend overall for our team. We played strong all weekend other than a few shifts in the second period against Harvard. I liked our work ethic in both games though,” he said. 

“Because of last year’s injury, this is my first season playing as a Raider,” Brennan said. “My goal for the rest of the season is to tally some points, while continuing to play an aggressive fore checking game. I am extremely fortunate to be surrounded by such an amazing coaching staff and team who push me to get better each and every day.” 

The Raiders now hold a 6-19 overall record (3-10), averaging about one and half goals scored per game. 

“Our hopes are that we want to earn points. These teams [upcoming Rensselaer and Union] are right around us in the standings. We’re desperately trying to climb up in the ECAC,” Fargo said. “The are no easy games, but these are two we really need. For us, we need to focus on ourselves and what we do.” 

Colgate returns home to Starr Rink in their games against Rensselaer on January 30 at 3 p.m. and Union on January 31 at 3 pm. Come support the Raiders at their last few home games!
