The Campus Safety Department notified the Colgate University community of a new program to increase the safety and security of bicycles and scooters on campus. An email sent by Assistant Director of Campus Safety Sean Dougherty on Friday, March 15, outlined the purpose of the program and instructions on how to register a bicycle or scooter.
“As we embrace the convenience and sustainability of bicycles, scooters and other micro-mobility devices on campus, we must also ensure their safety and security,” the email read. “To support this goal, Colgate University will offer a bicycle/scooter registration program designed to protect your valuable transportation.”
The program allows students to register their bicycle or scooter with Campus Safety, which requires providing some details about the bicycle or scooter and acquiring an identification sticker.
“The registration involves recording details such as make, model, color and serial number. Once registered, a uniquely numbered sticker is affixed to your bicycle or scooter,” the message read.
The identification sticker will allow Campus Safety and law enforcement to significantly increase the chance of recovery in any case of theft or loss.
The email provided simple instructions on how to register a bicycle or scooter.
“Bring your bicycle or scooter to the Campus Safety office. Officers will gather the necessary information, and you will be issued a numbered sticker — free of charge,” the message said. “The process takes just a few minutes.”
Campus Safety also reminded the community of important safety recommendations for those who use scooters or bicycles and urged students to register to ensure a more secure environment on campus.
“Your cooperation in registering your transportation devices and following safety guidelines is crucial for creating a secure and enjoyable environment,” the email concluded.
