Women’s Hockey Drops Two ECAC Matchups
Last weekend, the women’s ice hockey team took on Quinnipiac and Princeton at home. Colgate fell 4-1 to No. 5 ranked Quinnipiac, despite first-year forward Megan Sullivan’s fourth goal of the season.
The following day, Colgate outshot Princeton 31-23, but couldn’t manage to come away with a win. Two goals from first-year forward Breanne Wilson-Bennett and sophomore forward Meghan Brennan were not enough to defeat Princeton, who ultimately won 4-2.
Quinnipiac took an early lead when Nicole Connery scored a goal halfway through the first period. In the middle frame, the Bobcats tallied another goal with less than two minutes remaining, while also deflecting four shots from the Raiders.
About twelve minutes into the final period, Sullivan, assisted by fellow first-year forwards Annika Zalewski and Shelby Perry, found herself in front of the net and cut into Quinnipiac’s lead with her fourth career goal. However, the Bobcats answered with a goal eighteen minutes into the period, and an empty netter with less than a minute remaining,
securing their 4-1 victory.
The next day the Raiders were back on the ice to face the Princeton Tigers. Princeton took the early lead with two goals by Molly Contini in the opening frame.
However, Wilson-Bennett recorded her second career marker in the seventh minute of the second period, cutting the Princeton advantage to 2-1. The Tigers stayed competitive in the middle frame, tacking on two more goals from Cristin Shanahan and Kelsey Koelzer.
Five minutes into the third period, Brennan scored off a pass from Zalewski, bringing the score to 4-2, but the Raiders were unable to close the deficit despite their strong offense throughout the contest.
Next up, Colgate will host Penn State for a two-game series on Friday, November 7, and Saturday, November 8.
