Nearly eight months after an unlawful residence entry at Colgate University prompted the arrest of a student on campus in January 2024, the Colgate community was provided an update on the ongoing legal measures being taken in response to this incident.
Terri Stewart, director of Campus Safety, and Joe Hernon, associate vice president for emergency management, Campus Safety and environmental health and safety, shared the update with the Colgate community via email on Sept. 5.
The email stated that amid the investigation, law enforcement also discovered that the arrested student had illicit video recordings from restrooms on campus, which the University specified were taken during the 2022-2023 academic year. The District Attorney had asked the University not to share this information — a rare occurrence — while law enforcement used the evidence to seek additional charges against the student.
“Over the last eight months, representatives from several Colgate support services, along with law enforcement, have spoken with the students identified in these videos,” the email read. “We will continue supporting these students. We are also prepared to help them throughout any possible criminal and civil proceedings that may take place in the months ahead.”
As of the Sept. 5 update, the individual, who is no longer a student at the University, has been charged with multiple felony counts of unlawful surveillance on campus and other charges unrelated to the University.
Campus Safety noted that they had searched all bathrooms for recording devices since the incident. Moving forward, these checks will become part of Campus Safety’s routine procedure.
The University will continue to update the community as it becomes aware of the investigation, according to Stewart and Hernon. The email also highlighted Colgate’s Counseling and Psychological Services, Haven, the Office of the Chaplains, Title IX Coordinator Amy Gordon and administrative deans as resources available.
