The 2014 A Cappella Jamboree, featuring the Colgate Thirteen and the Swinging ‘Gates, took place on Saturday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in the Colgate Memorial Chapel. The concert coincided with Entrepreneur Weekend, allowing many students, parents, faculty and alums to attend, and showcased the talents of both groups’ graduating seniors.

Senior Enrique CuUnjieng started the show by introducing the Swinging ‘Gates to the stage. The ladies, all wearing black dresses with white corsages on their wrists, began the evening with “Pitch Pipe.” They followed with “Leave the Pieces,” featuring senior Colleen Oberg with the first solo of the evening.

Next, senior Kelly Curtis was featured in a rendition of “Why Should I Cry,” followed by “Longest Time,” with a solo by senior Carly Trainor. Senior Natalie Barkus was featured next in “Weakness.”

Senior Katja Melthaus was featured in “The Way I Am,” and senior Madeline Donovan followed in a rendition of The Script’s popular song “Breakeven.” The ladies, joined by their first-year members, finished their portion of the evening with a beautiful version of “Cups,” the catchy song made famous by Anna Kendrick in “Pitch Perfect.”

Following an introduction by Donovan, the Thirteen took the stage, all in suits with Colgate ties and red boutonni??res. They began their performance with “Stand By Me,” featuring a solo by senior James Speight.

Next, senior Tyler Reeve soloed in a performance of “Naturally,” after which senior Karl Jackson led a jazzy rendition of “Mean Old World.” The boys then all performed “My Romance,” showcasing the compatibility of their voices and performance.

A rendition of Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours” featured a solo by senior Devankit Sahoo. Senior Ross Nicholson followed with “Blue Skies,” a song the Thirteen has performed often in their over 70-year history.

CuUnjieng and Jackson were both featured in “End of Time,” delivering fabulous solos. The boys then all sang a “Daft Punk Medley,” featuring songs from the duo’s album “Random Access Memories” that recently won the 2014 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

The Thirteen finished with their traditional finale, “Good Bye, My Coney Island Baby,” a light-hearted tune that showed the versatility of the boys.

This Jamboree was the last concert of the year featuring both the Swinging ‘Gates and the Colgate Thirteen, and it certainly proved to be a strong finish for the graduating seniors.
