Women’s Lacrosse Picks Up First Win
After the Raiders dropped a close 12-11 decision to Canisius in the middle of last week, they returned to action at Tyler’s Field, seeking their first victory of the season. Facing the Drexel Dragons, junior midfielder Megan Ark continued her hot start to the season, leading the Raiders with eight points and helping her team capture its first victory.
The Raiders had lost their previous three games by a total of six points and were looking to buck the trend as they hosted Drexel. The Raiders saw the Dragons score the first two goals of the game, but senior captain Monica White responded by scoring the first two Raider goals just a minute apart to tie the game up at two. After Drexel responded four minutes later, Ark scored her first of six on the day.
White and Ark combined for three of the next four Raiders goals, while sophomore attacker Kallan Murray tallied the other. Junior goalie Jenny Berglin’s eight saves on the day helped keep the Raiders in the game in the first half as they headed into the locker room with a slim 7-6 lead.
First-year defenseman Sarah Bowles followed up her strong two-goal game against Canisius, scoring the first goal of the second half for the Raiders off an assist from Ark. The Raiders allowed the Dragons to score exactly a minute later, and their lead was back at 8-7. Colgate responded emphatically with two goals in the next three minutes, as Ark scored her fourth and sophomore midfielder Kristen Norden scored her first of the season to extend the Raiders lead to 10-7.
After a Drexel goal, Ark and White once again took over for the Raiders, combining for three goals in the next 10 minutes of play and allowing the Raiders defense to take control of the game. The Raiders saw a strong defensive effort in the second half, holding Drexel to four goals and Berglin was big in net making six saves.
The Raiders 13-10 victory hopes to be a jumping off point for the team which is averaging over 10 goals per game this season. They travel to Worcester, M.A. to take on Holy Cross at 1 p.m. this
Saturday, March 8.
