Welcome Back, Colgate University! If you spent your break the same way I did, it was great to relax and take some time to rewind after last semester. For this week, here are some songs I have been listening to for motivation this semester.
1. “Mona Lisa” – Dominic Fike (2023)
This track blends smooth vibes with an infectious beat that instantly makes you want to dance. Dominic Fike’s laid-back vocals and lyrics about finding the bright side remind you to stay positive, even when things feel complicated. As one of my favorite artists, Fike nails the balance between introspection and energy, making this song the perfect mood booster for any day.
2. “The Boys Are Back in Town” – Thin Lizzy (1976)
A classic anthem about reconnecting with friends and getting back into the swing of things. This song energizes me with its rock vibe and sense of community, reminding me that I am back with friends.
3. “Lush Life” – Zara Larsson (2015)
With its infectious beat and bright energy, this track is perfect for giving you a rush when you need a pick-me-up. Zara’s empowering vocals and the song’s carefree lyrics remind you to embrace the highs and enjoy the journey, even when things get tough. It’s a great motivator to stay positive and keep pushing through the semester, all while having fun along the way.
4. “Roommates” – Malcolm Todd (2023)
Malcolm Todd is an artist I’ll definitely have on repeat in 2025 — and honestly, everyone should! “Roommates” is a true testament to his creative vision, with catchy melodies and nostalgic vibes that immediately capture your attention. Despite the lyrics, the song’s beat is perfect for uplifting your mood and getting you hyped for the day ahead.
5. “Linger” – The Cranberries (1993)
While not necessarily an upbeat song, the reflective, emotive qualities of “Linger” help provide motivation for reflection. It encourages growth and emotional maturity, which can fuel academic and personal progress. Make sure you do not let your work linger this semester!
6. “Where You Lead” – Carole King (1971)
This song exudes loyalty, partnership and determination. It can be a reminder to stay committed to your goals, your path and your relationships, whether with professors, classmates or friends.
7. “Messy” – Lola Young (2024)
This is the song that blew up on TikTok over winter break! I had this song on repeat, listening to the catchy lyrics and beat. “Messy” really ties into that idea of embracing imperfections, rejecting unrealistic expectations and accepting that it’s okay not to be perfect. You’re allowed to be a little “messy” and imperfect, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still thrive!
8. “Valerie” – Mark Ronson ft. Amy Winehouse (2007)
A funky song that can lift your spirits and remind you to have fun with your journey. The upbeat energy is a mood booster and perfectly helps me when I need to shake off stress or self-doubt.
9. “Suddenly I See” – KT Tunstall (2005)
This song is iconic for its empowering message and its upbeat rhythm. A great anthem for when you have a breakthrough in your studies or feel on top of things.
10. “Play That Funky Music” – Wild Cherry (1976)
Another energizing classic! The funky vibe can definitely get you into a productive, upbeat mood. It’s a reminder to take a break, dance and let loose when needed to stay fresh and motivated.
11. “What You Know” – Two Door Cinema Club (2011)
This song is a bit introspective, but with a catchy, rhythmic beat that keeps the energy up. It encourages you to consider what you’re really capable of, making it a good motivator to keep pushing forward and trust your own knowledge and abilities.
12. “Like Real People Do” – Hozier (2014)
Beautiful and soulful, this song speaks to the importance of authenticity and self-awareness. It might remind you to stay grounded and true to yourself during the ups and downs of the semester.
13. “It Was A Good Day” – Ice Cube (1992)
A laid-back track that reminds you to appreciate the little victories. Perfect for celebrating small wins in the semester, whether it’s acing an exam or just making it through a tough week.
