Daft Punk, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Lorde were the big winners at this year’s 56th annual Grammy Awards, held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles last Sunday, January 26. Daft Punk won Record of the Year and Pop Duo/Group Performance with Pharrell Williams for “Get Lucky” and Dance/Electronica Album and Album of the Year for “Random Access Memories.” They also collaborated with Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder, which was a crowd hit.

 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis had an equally huge night. They won for Best New Artist, Rap Performance and Rap Song for “Thrift Shop” and Rap Album for “The Heist.” Despite their four wins, their most impactful moment of the night was their performance of “Same Love.” Along with Mary Lewis, Madonna and Queen Latifah, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis gave a truly powerful performance which featured 33 gay and straight couples being wed onstage. The performance brought many audience members to tears.

 Lorde won Song of the Year and Pop Solo Performance for “Royals,” which she also performed during the show. The 17-year-old seemed shocked, as were many audience members, given the fact that she was up against some stiff competition in both categories. Her live performance during the show, however, was more than enough proof that she was deserving of both wins.

 Newcomer Kacey Musgraves, who was nominated for New Artist, dominated the night in country, winning Country Song for “Merry Go ‘Round” and Country Album for “Same Trailer Different Park.” Her wins were also surprising, given that she was pitted against Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert in each category. While Taylor Swift didn’t take home any awards, she did provide one of the most talked about moments on social media, with her hair flips and whiplash during her performance of her new ballad “All

Too Well.”

 This year’s show had several spectacular performances. The show opened with the much-anticipated collaboration between husband-and-wife duo Jay-Z and Beyonce performing a steamy rendition of “Drunk in Love” off of Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album that dropped in late 2013.

 Jay-Z won Rap/Song Collaboration for “Holy Grail,” which he accepted and joked, “I want to tell Blue, Daddy got a gold sippy cup for you.”

 One of the most explosive mashups of the night was Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” and Kendrick Lamar’s “good kid, m.A.A.d city.” The performance was filled with strobe lights and splashes of red paint and was certainly one of the most enjoyed parts of the night. Imagine Dragons won Best Rock Performance for “Radioactive.”

Finally, The Beatles were honored at this year’s awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The two remaining members of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, reunited on stage to perform “Queenie Eye.” The audience erupted following the performance. Both were grateful for the award and happy that their music was still being enjoyed by fans. McCartney also won Best Long-Form Music Video for “Live Kisses.”
