Valentine’s Themed Events Send Cards and Donations to St. Jude’s
Saturday, February 9 launched the beginning of the community-wide celebration of St. Valentine’s Day with a card-making party at 110 Broad Street, sponsored by Philanthropy at Colgate (PAC), Blue Diamond Society (BDS), Kappa Kappa Gamma and Delta Delta Delta, with a party following later that evening, hosted by PAC, BDS and Delta Delta Delta.
Spearheaded since mid-December by Event Coordinator of PAC junior Amanda Leonard, these Valentine’s Day events brought together members from both the Colgate and the Hamilton Central School communities to fundraise and make cards for the children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.. Over 250 people attended the Valentine’s-themed Day party from 12 to 4 p.m., enjoying an assortment of festive treats and creating approximately 300 cards to be sent to the children of St. Jude’s in time for Valentine’s Day.
In preparation for this event, representative of all four sponsors worked tables at the O’Connor Campus Center to advertise this event throughout campus. Posters publicizing the card-making party were displayed in Hamilton Elementary, Hamilton Public Library and the Colgate Bookstore, generating great positive response from the community.
The second party at 110 Broad began at 10 p.m. and featured senior Eddie Jacob as DJ. The party raised approximately $1,600 to be donated to St. Jude’s.
“We wanted a really strong first event of the semester and we definitely succeeded,” Leonard said. “No one in the house expected to raise this much money from something that started so small but became so big. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun and we achieved a lot.”
Other upcoming Valentine’s Day philanthropy events include the “Vagina Monologues” at the Palace Theater at 6:30 p.m. on February 14, 15 and 16 with proceeds going to Vera House, Victims of Violence and V-Day Campaign.
Additionally, PAC and BDS plan to host a Journey cover-band concert on Saturday, February 23 to support the organization Save a Child’s Heart.
