Men’s Ice Hockey Slips in League Standings
Last weekend, the Colgate men’s ice hockey team lost two games on the road, versus the Harvard Crimson and the Dartmouth Big Green. The final scores were 1-4 against Harvard and 4-5 versus Dartmouth.
On February 15, the Raiders fell to Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. The first period featured no scoring by either team, but two Colgate penalties (on senior Billy Rivellini at 10:08 for hooking and on first-year Kyle Baun at 13:44 for tripping) and one Harvard penalty at 17:41. First-year Spencer Finney served most of the game in goal.
Harvard scored their first goal of the evening during the first minute of the second period. The Raiders retaliated with a power play goal at 5:40, shot by first-year Mike Borkowski and assisted by first-years Tyson and Tylor Spink. The second half of the period was punctuated by two additional Crimson goals, at 11:29 and 15:11. As the buzzer sounded for the end of the second period, a penalty was called on first-year Kevin Lough and a Harvard player, both for roughing.
The third period featured a fourth Harvard goal, in addition to five separate Harvard penalties, including one for too many
players on the ice. Colgate also had two penalties: Rivellini received a second penalty at 8:49 for boarding, and first-year Darcy Murphy at 16:25 for roughing. Junior Eric Mihalik was put in goal at 12:51, and was then pulled out at 18:57 to allow for six Colgate players. Unfortunately, Harvard was able to take advantage of the empty net, and their final goal was scored at 19:30.
The next evening, February 16, Colgate traveled to Hanover, N.H. to play Dartmouth. Scoring and penalties during the first period was concentrated in the second half, including two Dartmouth goals and the first Raider goal at 12:27 by junior Mike McCann and assisted by senior captain Nathan Sinz. There were also two Dartmouth penalties and a Colgate penalty, on Baun at 13:03
for cross-checking.
The second period began with an early Colgate goal at 1:08, shot by Murphy and assisted by Lough and senior Kurtis Bartliff. Dartmouth answered with their own goal a few minutes later. However, during the final quarter of the period, Colgate was able to score again, at 16:46, shot by sophomore Joe Wilson and assisted by senior Robbie Bourdon, ending the quarter with a tied score.
At 2:17 of the third period, sophomore Spiro Goulakos received a penalty for tripping.
Colgate then scored their final goal of the evening at 9:14. It was scored by Tylor Spink and assisted by Borkowski. Dartmouth scored again a few minutes later. Goulakos received another penalty at 13:56 for interference. During this Colgate penalty kill, the Big Green scored their fifth goal. Finney served in goal until 19:03 of the third, at which time he was pulled from goal, though six players was to no avail for the Raiders.
