Sports Spotlight: Nick Arpey ’14
Sport: Men’s Soccer
Hometown: Iowa City, Iowa
Major: Undecided
Why Nick? He put the touch on the Raiders’s
closest shot at scoring in the Navy 2OT tilt that
ended in a knotted score at 0 apiece.
1. The tie at Navy secured the second seed for the
Raiders, but a win would have meant hosting the
tournament. Is it an overall positive feeling in
the locker room?
There is a positive feeling in the locker room. Although
we would have liked to host the tournament,
we all realize that we still have the opportunity to
win a Patriot League championship.
2. The game was the eighth overtime game of the season for the team, tying the alltime
record. What has caused you guys to accomplish this feat, and what changes
about the game in overtime?
The pace of the game changes, as both teams are pushing for the game-winning goal. I
think what has made us successful in overtime is our ability to maintain mental focus
and believe that we will score, as well as overall team fitness.
3. A blast off your foot provided the closest opportunity for the Raiders, as Steve
Miller’s deflection almost put it in. Did you think you had tied the game when you
saw Steve deflect it?
I thought we had tied the game. The ball was cleared out to me off a corner kick and
I just tried to hit the ball on goal. Steve was able to redirect it to the corner, but the
goalkeeper made a great save.
4. Last season, Colgate hosted the Patriot League Tournament, but was not able to
take the championship home. Will playing in Washington take pressure off the team?
It is nice to play on your own field in front of your home fans, but I think it will take
some pressure off the team. There is always some added pressure when you are the
top seed.
5. Lehigh represents your next opponent, and the two teams played to a scoreless
tie earlier in the year. What will you need to focus on to ensure the win?
We need to continue to stay focused, work hard in practice and improve as a team. Lehigh
is a very good defensive team, so we will need to come out with a lot of energy and
try to score a goal early.
